This award, named in honor of Renata Forste in 2026, encourages quality student research and writing in the social sciences, sciences, technology, engineering, or mathematics related to Global Women’s Studies.

Renata Forste began her career at BYU as a professor in the Department of Sociology. She later served as chair of this department, Associate Dean of the College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences, and Director of the David M. Kennedy Center. She currently serves as the International Vice President. Her research focuses on maternal and child health and family formation. Among her many contributions to academics at BYU is her role in the establishment of the Global Women’s Studies program

ELIGIBILITY

Contestants must be enrolled as students at Brigham Young University during the academic year in which their essay was written and submitted to the competition.

REQUIREMENTS

The essays must be at least 3000 words long and based on original research.

AMOUNT OF AWARD

First prize $400, second prize $200, third prize $100. If the authors agree, the winning essays may be recognized and considered for inclusion in the following year’s volume of the Global Women’s Studies student journal, AWE: A Woman’s Experience.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE

Submissions open during the last week of fall semester and continue until midnight on April 16, 2025. The GWS executive committee will choose the winning essays. The committee’s decision, announced at the annual closing social, will be final.
