Imperial palaces, baroque churches, medieval streets, iconic modernism, and pastries galore: Vienna is an experience overload. We will also visit Salzburg, Hallstatt, the Austrian Alps, and Kraków, Poland. Sponsored by the Department of German & Russian, Vienna Study Abroad 2024 is tailored to those without any German experience and also to German majors and minors. All students will fulfill the GE Arts requirement during this program. There will also be work opportunities for qualified students. Funding is available to students with financial need and those with majors or minors in the humanities.

Courses

6+ credit hours from among the following:

GERM 346—Art and Architecture in German-Speaking Europe (3 credit hours; required; fulfills GE Arts requirement)
GERM 101/102—Beginning German (4 credit hours)
GERM 201/202—Intermediate German (4 credit hours)
GERM 301/302/303—Intermediate German (3 credit hours)
GERM 311R—Advanced German Conversation (2 credit hours; necessary for German minor)
GERM 345R—Opera and Theater in Vienna (3 credits; for intermediate and advanced students)

Other courses may be offered based on student interest.

Students may not take any other courses on this program, including BYU Online courses, without approval by the program director and ISP.

Cost

$5,500–6,000

Includes Latter-day Saint undergraduate full tuition and international health insurance. The basic program cost includes several group activities in Vienna and excursions to Salzburg, Hallstatt, Dorfgastein, Kraków, and other sites.

Does not include airfare, lunches in Vienna, most meals on excursions, other meals not provided by AAIE, personal expenses, souvenirs, or non-program related entrance fees.

Funding Sources

Regular BYU tuition scholarships, Pell Grants, and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to study abroad programs.

Students who submit the financial aid section of the ISP application and who have a current FAFSA form on file at the Financial Aid Office (A-41 ASB) will be considered for a Study Abroad scholarship.

Academic departments and colleges may assist with scholarships and grants. Grants are also available to all students with majors or minors in the college of humanities.

Private grants and scholarships outside of BYU may also assist (see kennedy.byu.edu/scholarships).

Preparation

Accepted students are required to participate in an international, cross-cultural preparation course (IAS 201R, 1 credit hour). This class will be held during the second block of the winter 2024 semester. Part-time BYU students and non-BYU students will need to pay an additional tuition fee. Accompanying spouses need to be credit-bearing participants on the program. Spouses will also need to apply online and take the preparation course.

Students must meet all country- and program-specific COVID and health requirements for travel.

Housing

The Austro-American Institute of Education (AAIE) in Vienna arranges housing with Viennese hosts for pairs of students. This provides students insight into Austrian culture. The host provides breakfast daily and one evening meal each week.

Travel

Students are responsible for purchasing their own airfare to and from the program sites. Airline reservations must be made through BYU Travel. Students should contact a BYU Travel agent.

Application Process

Students must be 18 years of age or older to participate.

Complete the online application here. A nonrefundable $35 application fee is required; applicants will be interviewed once the application is complete.

Students will be notified via e-mail of their acceptance into the program. The first payment is due upon acceptance; please refer to the Payment Information page.

Program Adjustments

International Study Programs (ISP) reserves the right to cancel this program, revise its offerings, or make any adjustments to the preliminary cost.

If it becomes necessary for ISP to cancel a program, all program payments made to BYU ISP will be refunded to the student’s BYU Financial account.

ISP is the only office authorized to cancel any of its programs.
