"THIS BLESSED PLOT, THIS EARTH, THIS REALM, THIS ENGLAND": LONDON AND THE CREATION OF BRITISH NATIONAL IDENTITY

What does it mean to belong to a nation? What does it mean to have a nation as part of one's identity? How can we see our own identities and balance being citizens of our own nation and the world?

These are the questions we will explore in London and throughout Great Britain by attending concerts and other performances in the great venues of London, by visiting various churches and other important religious sites, by studying (in) important buildings, gardens and museums, and by touring the locations that shaped the works of iconic British writers. We will also study the development of the English language as we travel to see key artifacts at London’s museums and encounter diverse varieties of English, which will inform our discussion about national identity and language.
