Across the Empire: Vienna and Beyond, 8 European Countries, 12 Major Cities

Dates: 27 April–20 June 2026
Application Deadline: 30 November 2025

From a home base in the imperial city of Vienna, Austria, you’ll set out across the former territories of the Holy Roman Empire and beyond. For 800 years, this empire shaped Europe—and now you’ll see its legacy for yourself. You’ll travel to Italy (Venice), the Czech Republic (Prague), Slovenia (Ljubljana), Slovakia (Bratislava), Hungary (Budapest), Poland (Krakow), and Germany (Munich). And of course, you’ll explore Austria (Vienna, Hallstatt, Salzburg). You’ll step into baroque churches, wander through medieval castles and imperial palaces, lose yourself in world-class museums, and take in the best Vienna has to offer in concerts and theater. You’ll also recharge in nature: hiking the Alps, exploring Europe’s largest ice cave, swimming in the Danube, biking through vineyards and storybook villages, and climbing up to castle ruins. And in the middle of it all, you’ll discover something more: Europe is part of your cultural heritage. Vienna belongs to you. It is YOUR city. You just don’t know it yet.

Sponsored by the Department of German & Russian, Vienna Study Abroad 2026 welcomes both students with no prior German experience and those pursuing a German major or minor. We also welcome married couples. All participants will fulfill the GE Arts requirement through this program. Funding is available for students with financial need as well as for those majoring or minoring in the humanities.
