Summer Institute for Spanish Teachers

Dates: 23 June–29 July 2025 (approx.)
Application Deadline: 7 February 2025

For thousands of years, Spain has been at the crossroads where diverse cultures and civilizations have met. Basques, Romans, Visigoths, Arabs, and many other peoples have found a home on the Iberian Peninsula. For the last five centuries, the history of Spain has been marked by an ambitious attempt to forge diverse ethnic and linguistic groups into a single, unified nation, but Spain remains an intricate mosaic of cultures. We will explore something of Spain’s heritage as we walk the medieval streets of Toledo, take in the beauty of Córdoba’s mosque, and contemplate the engineering marvels of Segovia’s Roman aqueduct while exploring different strategies to include these in your classes and lesson plans.

The BYU Summer Institute for Spanish Teachers is offered every third year (2025, 2028, 2031) and allows the practicing teacher to refresh their linguistic ability in Spanish, increase their understanding of the Spanish culture, and gain 9 semester credits of graduate course work.

This is accomplished through specialized courses that start on campus and are completed in Spain. Teachers may apply to attend the summer institute apart from the master’s program. Scholarships provided by BYU help reduce the cost to teachers, making this program an incredible opportunity and bargain! It will change the way you teach (for the better).
