Spain Business Student Exchange Program

Students will attend classes at Universidad de Alcalá in Alcalá de Henares, Spain. Alcalá de Henares is a Spanish city whose historical center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was founded by Cardinal Jiménez de Cisneros in the early 16th century and was the world’s first planned university city—many urban cities were modeled after its design. Located in the Autonomous Community of Madrid, 35 km northeast of the city of Madrid, at an altitude of 588 m (1,929 ft) above sea level, it has a population of around 200,000, the second largest of the region after Madrid.

Courses

Courses are available in both English and Spanish. No Spanish language skills are required. A broad spectrum of business courses is offered.

This program was designed for business majors and minors, and only business classes are guaranteed to transfer. Many courses will count toward Marriott School courses and the Global Business Certificate.

All courses must be pre-approved before the trip by the Marriott School’s Whitmore Global Business Center. For a list of courses available at Universidad de Alcalá, please visit the GBC (360 TNRB).

Students may not take any other courses on this program, including BYU Online courses, without approval by the program director and ISP.

Cost

BYU Tuition

Includes Latter-day Saint undergraduate full tuition (increased cost for graduate and non–Latter-day Saint students); students will be exempt from Universidad de Alcalá tuition. BYU tuition payment plans and scholarships are still applicable.

Does not include airfare to and from Spain, visa fees, ground transportation, accommodations, meals, or any other educational and personal expenses incurred during the program. Students will also need to pay the $35 ISP application fee.

Funding Sources

Regular BYU tuition scholarships, Pell Grants, and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to study abroad programs.

Students who submit the financial aid section of the ISP application and who have a current FAFSA form on file at the Financial Aid Office (A-41 ASB) will be considered for a Study Abroad scholarship.

Academic departments and colleges may assist with scholarships and grants.

Private grants and scholarships outside of BYU may also assist (see kennedy.byu.edu/scholarships).

Preparation

Accepted students are required to participate in an international, cross-cultural preparation course (IAS 201R, 1 credit hour).

Accompanying spouses need to be credit-bearing participants on the program. Spouses will also need to apply online and take the preparation course.

Students must meet all country- and program-specific COVID and health requirements for travel.

Housing

Students are responsible for making their own housing arrangements. No on-campus housing is available. The Global Business Center, along with the host institution, may help with finding appropriate housing.

Travel

Students are responsible for purchasing their own airfare to and from the program sites. Airline reservations must be made through BYU Travel. Students should contact a BYU Travel agent.

Application Process

BYU welcomes students from any university to apply to participate in our study abroad programs. However, internships and direct enrollment programs are limited to BYU Provo students.

Students must be 18 years of age or older to participate.

Complete the online application here. A nonrefundable $35 application fee is required; applicants will be interviewed once the application is complete.

Students will be notified via e-mail of their acceptance into the program. The first payment is due upon acceptance; please refer to the Payment Information page.

Program Adjustments

International Study Programs (ISP) reserves the right to cancel this program, revise its offerings, or make any adjustments to the preliminary cost.

If it becomes necessary for ISP to cancel a program, all program payments made to BYU ISP will be refunded to the student’s BYU Financial account.

ISP is the only office authorized to cancel any of its programs.

The Student Exchange Program (SEP) is an independent international experience. SEP is individual students immersing themselves with local and international students on a foreign campus for a semester independent of any BYU professor or other BYU students.
