Plague, Penicillin, and Pasteur: Microbiology in Europe
Priority Deadline: 15 November 2024
Application Deadline: 15 December 2024
FRANCE, NETHERLANDS, GERMANY
This program will focus on the historical and applied aspects of microbiology and molecular biology. Students will visit London, Cambridge, Oxford, Amsterdam, Delft, Frankfurt and Berlin as part of their study abroad. Visits to museums will be highlighted with presentations that the general public do not get to see, including disease diagnosis using London plague pit skeletons, Fleming’s lab where penicillin was discovered, microscopes made by van Leeuwenhoek and Darwin, and the Cavendish Laboratory! We will make pretzels in Germany and gouda cheese in Gouda (and eat them, too!). The program will end in Berlin. This program will be most appealing to science students, but especially those interested in medicine, microbiology, and food science, as they will learn how these disciplines are applied and used in daily living.
