SPAIN AND MOROCCO
STUDY ABROAD GENERAL EDUCATION (SAGE)

Learn the evaluation tools and use them in the field.

PEAT: Spain & Morocco is a comparative field program where students learn real monitoring and evaluation tools (interviews, observation, participatory methods) and apply them across communities on both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar. Over the course of the program, student will develop and use their evaluation toolkit throughout Spain and Morocco, comparing how communities have responded to shared historical, environmental, and economic challenges. It's hands-on training with the same rapid, comparative evaluation methods used in professional development and nonprofit work.

We will visit:

  • Barcelona—Sagrada Família and fieldwork in El Raval
  • Córdoba—the Mezquita Catedral and Jewish Quarter
  • Granada—the Alhambra and the Albaicín
  • Cadiz—Europe's oldest continuously inhabited city
  • Chefchaouen—the "Blue City" and the Rif Mountains
  • Fez—historic medina and women's cooperatives
  • Marrakech—Jemaa el Fnaa and the souks
  • Casablanca—The Hassan II Mosque

Courses

Students will register for 6 credit hours during the program in the following GE-credited courses:

SOC 301—Applied Social Research Methods (3 credit hours)
Research methods training for conducting research in applied settings using social research methods such as needs assessments, social impact analysis, and program evaluations.

SOC 390R/490R—Special Topics: International Comparative Sociology (3 credit hours)
An international, comparative look at the sociology of food, religion, migration, and economic development across Spain and Morocco.

Students may not take any other courses on this program, including BYU Online courses, without approval by the program director and ISP.

Cost

$5,400–5,800

Includes Latter-day-Saint undergraduate full tuition (increased cost for graduates and non–Latter-day-Saint students), all housing, travel within and between the program cities, and breakfasts.

Does not include airfare, lunches and dinners, or any personal expenses (such as attractions visited on personal time and souvenirs).

Funding Sources

Regular BYU tuition scholarships, Pell Grants, and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to Study Abroad programs.

Students who submit the financial aid section of the ISP application, and who have a current FAFSA form on file at the Financial Aid Office (A-41 ASB) will be considered for a Study Abroad scholarship.

Academic departments and colleges may also assist with scholarships and grants.

Private grants and scholarships outside of BYU may also assist (see kennedy.byu.edu/scholarships).

Scholarships are not applied until the last payment is due.

Preparation

During the semester before departure, students are required to participate in a once-a-week preparation course (IAS 201R, 1 credit).

This evening course will be held on Thursdays from 4 to 6 PM during the second block of the winter semester 2027.

Part-time BYU students and non-BYU students will need to pay an additional tuition fee for the prep class.

International study programs are physically, emotionally, and mentally demanding, so you must be in good health to participate. These programs often take place in locations that do not have the same level of safety and services in terms of transportation, living conditions, residential accommodations, food, public behavior, and policing that you may be used to on campus. Students will be housed in hostels and hotels.

Travel

Students are responsible for purchasing their own airfare to and from the program. Airline reservations must be made through BYU Travel. Students should contact a BYU Travel agent.

Application Process

Students must be 18 years of age or older to participate.

Complete the online application here. A nonrefundable $35 application fee is required; applicants will be interviewed once the application is complete.

Students will be notified via e-mail of their acceptance into the program. The first payment is due upon acceptance; please refer to the Payment Information page.

Program Adjustments

International Study Programs (ISP) reserves the right to cancel this program, revise its offerings, or make any adjustments to the preliminary cost.

If it becomes necessary for ISP to cancel a program, all program payments made to BYU ISP will be refunded to the student’s BYU Financial account.

ISP is the only office authorized to cancel any of its programs.
