Pasefika Alliance for Indigenous Research Internship

Dates: 21 July–4 August 2027
Application Deadline: 1 December 2026

The BYU Pasefika Alliance for Indigenous Research (PAIR) internship program is an immersive clinical, public health, and environmental research experience focused on understanding, addressing, and reducing Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) health disparities among Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) populations, while also exploring how Indigenous cultures understand illness and use traditional knowledge to manage their environments. The prevalence and incidence of ADRD within NHPI communities are not well understood due to the lack of comprehensive research. However, we do know that ADRD disproportionately affects low-income and minority populations, including NHPIs, who experience an earlier onset of Alzheimer's disease and more health-related risk factors.

Students involved in this program will actively participate in recruitment, enrollment, and data collection during our culturally tailored, hands-on Brain Health Fairs in Tonga. At these events, we provide vital ADRD education and collect essential data and biological samples, raising awareness and promoting good brain health within these communities. Students will work closely with our partners in Tonga to conduct these workshops in villages and church groups, focusing on participants aged fifty and above. In New Zealand, they will participate in a pilot study to understand how generations of local management has led to insights on the management of coastal ecosystems.

Finally, students will participate in genetic studies that help to better understand the genetic risks that may contribute to the high rates of ADRD throughout Polynesia. In all aspects of this program, students will interact with indigenous medical and educational professionals, as well as government and church leaders, to promote sustainable improvement in healthcare in Tonga and stewardship in Aotearoa New Zealand, leaving a lasting impact on the community.
