Pacific Island Research Internship Tonga

Dates: 10 July–25 July 2025
Application Deadline: 22 November 2024

The BYU Pacific Island Research Internship (PIRI) program is an immersive clinical, public health, and research experience that seeks to understand, address, and reduce Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD)—related health disparities experienced by Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) populations. The prevalence and incidence of (ADRD) within the NHPI communities are not well understood due to the lack of comprehensive research. However, we do know that ADRD disproportionately affects low-income and minority populations, including NHPIs, who experience an earlier onset of AD and more health-related risk factors.

Students involved in this program will actively participate in recruitment, enrollment, and data collection during our culturally tailored, hands-on Brain Health Fairs on three islands in Tonga. At these events, we provide vital ADRD education and collect essential data and biological samples, raising awareness and promoting good brain health within these communities. Students will work closely with our partners in Tonga to conduct these workshops in villages and church groups, focusing on participants aged 50 and above.

Finally, students will participate in genetic studies that help to better understand the genetic risks that may contribute to the high rates of ADRD throughout Polynesia. In all aspects of this program, students will interact with indigenous medical and educational professionals, as well as government and church leaders, to promote sustainable improvement in healthcare in Tonga, leaving a lasting impact on the community.
