Modern Spain

Dates: 24 June–8 August 2025 (approx.)
Application Deadline: 1 November 2024

Make Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla, and other great Spanish cities your classroom by signing up for the Spain study abroad for summer term of 2025!

You will earn valuable GE credits as you study in Spain, one of the most fascinating and beautiful countries in the world. Modern Spain emerged from a rich history that includes millennia of migrations, encounters, conquests, and re-conquests, where Phoenicians, Celts, Iberians, Basques, Romans, Visigoths, Jews, Arabs, and others have made Spain their home. Spain also became the center of one of the largest empires in modern history, which began with Columbus’ voyage in 1492 and soon encompassed lands from the Philippines to the Americas to Europe. While we explore the rich history and regional cultures of Spain, we will also revel in the modern wonders of Spain’s great cities, among the most popular in Europe, which are home to amazing architecture, restaurants, museums, beaches, and bustling shopping and business districts.

Preparation

Admitted students are required to participate in an international cross-cultural preparation course (IAS 201R, 1 credit hour). This evening course will be held during the second block of winter semester 2025.

Part-time BYU students and non-BYU students will need to pay an additional tuition fee for enrolling in the prep class.

The program is tentatively scheduled to begin on 24 June, with students completing the program on 8 August. Students should plan to be in Spain for the complete duration of the program and refrain from scheduling late arrivals or early departures.

More specific recommendations regarding travel will be provided to program participants in the preparation course.

Students must meet all country- and program-specific COVID and health requirements for travel.

International study programs are physically, emotionally, and mentally taxing and you must be in good health to participate. These programs often take place in international locations that do not have the same level of safety and services in terms of transportation, living conditions, residential accommodations, food, public behavior, and policing that you may be used to on campus. If you have further questions or concerns on this, please see our travel policy.
