JAPAN STUDY ABROAD 2 is designed for students who will have completed JAPAN 202 by Spring 2027.
Get out of the classroom and experience JAPAN!
Japan Study Abroad 2 (Summer Term 2027) will travel across all 5 of Japan’s major islands, experiencing the distinct cultures, landscapes, and traditions of Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Okinawa. We will begin in Kyoto, Japan’s ancient capital and cultural heart. Through group excursions, blogging, festival celebrations, and other forms of interactive learning, we will deepen our cultural knowledge and language skills. Together, we will explore Kyoto’s legendary temples, shrines, and museums, alongside modern attractions like the Nintendo and Manga Museums. We will experience the excitement of Gion Matsuri, Japan’s largest and most iconic summer festival. Our journey will also take us to Okinawa and Hokkaido, where we will experience the diversity of Japan’s regions and indigenous peoples through Ryukyu culture, Ainu heritage, and stunning natural landscapes.
During the final weeks of the program, we will traverse Japan by bullet train and local transit, visiting moving sites of war and remembrance in Hiroshima and Fukuoka, Koka’s ninja sites, castle sites in Osaka, Tokushima and Nagoya, Ghibli-themed attractions, and other remarkable historical and cultural landmarks along the way. We will also explore Kamakura’s iconic Great Buddha, the coastal beaches of Enoshima, and sweeping views of Mt. Fuji. Along the way, we will enjoy traditional arts and performances and spend time in Tokyo, Japan’s vibrant capital and a hub of modern culture, before continuing on to Tokyo DisneySea and concluding in Sendai for the Sendai Tanabata Festival, Sendai’s largest and most famous celebration.
