Italy and Greece: Rhetoric, Architecture, and Food

Dates: 13 May–13 June 2025
Priority Deadline: 1 November 2024
Application Deadline: 1 December 2024

From the ancient city to the kitchen, “Rhetoric, Architecture, and Food” investigates how the preparation of meals, the production of public spaces, and the art of persuasion all helped to shape the classical world. Study during your spring semester in Athens and Rome, with on-site lectures that give plenty of time to savor the city without the summertime press of tourists. Good itineraries to Greece and Italy normally hit the highlights, but this exceptional program allows time for exploring and visiting (and revisiting) well beyond the trodden paths—and without the noisy crowds. Did we mention the architecture, the pasta . . . the gelato?

The academic goals of this program focus on General Education curriculum, drawing on the incredible breadth of the Greco-Roman classroom. We will start in Athens, travel through Santorini, and end the semester in Rome. Once in Rome, we will complete trips to Napoli, Pompeii, Amalfi, Venice, and Florence.

Participants with Medical Conditions and Disabilities: International study programs are physically, emotionally, and mentally taxing and you must be in good health to participate. Because of changes in environment, diet, sleep, routine, and relationships, some conditions may worsen during an international study program. The availability of healthcare treatment and disability accommodations may be limited depending on the nature of the program and the destination country. Accessibility laws and services available in the United States are not generally available in other countries and some countries limit the prescription drugs you can carry into their boundaries. If you have a serious medical condition or a disability (physical, emotional, or mental), an international study experience may not be appropriate for you at this time. If you have a regimen of treatment, it should not be altered in order for you to participate. Please carefully review the requirements of the program and consult with your health care provider before applying to verify that you are adequately prepared to participate. If you have a serious medical condition or disability, please consider consulting with your UAC coordinator, or the International Study Programs office, to discuss the options that might or might not be available to you if you were to participate in an international study program.

Students must meet all country- and program-specific COVID and health requirements for travel.
