THE NETHERLANDS AND DENMARK

Join in this unique opportunity to learn about water resources engineering in a setting with a rich history of extreme water challenges. Twenty-six percent of the land area of the Netherlands lies below sea level. These areas are largely farmlands that have been reclaimed from the ocean over the last several centuries through the industrious engineering of the Dutch people. The Netherlands is regarded today as a global leader in water resources engineering.

In the Water and Sustainability Program, students will earn technical elective/capstone course credit, meet students at host universities, work on global water challenge research projects, study the incredible Delta Works, learn about the dikes that hold back the North Sea, explore historic windmills, tour the famous Anne Frank House, enjoy the Van Gogh Museum, cruise the historic Amsterdam canal system, and visit Denmark, where you will visit cultural sites and learn about large-scale flood management systems and climate change adaptation strategies.

Courses

Students are required to enroll in the following courses:

PREREQUISITES: CE 414—Engineering Applications of GIS (3.0 credits) & CE 431—Hydrology (3.0 credits)

Winter 2024: CE 471—Civil Engineering Practice (3.0 credit preparation class)

Spring 2024: CE 439—Water Resources Study Abroad (3.0 credits); this course counts as a civil engineering technical elective (graduate and undergraduate) and can be used to fill the undergraduate capstone graduation requirement.

Students may not take any other courses on this program, including BYU Online courses, without approval by the program director and ISP.

Cost

$4,900–5,300 (before scholarship)

Includes Latter-day Saint undergraduate spring term tuition (increased cost for graduate and non–Latter-day Saint students), airfare, housing, ground transportation in Europe, most museum and entrance fees, and international health insurance coverage.

Does not include personal expenses, souvenirs, or most meals.

The cost of this program has been reduced significantly as a result of the generous support of the Department of Civil and Construction Engineering. Additionally, the Weidman Center provides generous scholarships to each student in the amount of $1,400 to further reduce the cost of this study abroad program. Please note that the subsidy does not apply to students outside of the BYU College of Engineering.

Funding Sources

Regular BYU tuition scholarships, Pell Grants, and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to study abroad programs.

Students who submit the financial aid section of the ISP application and who have a current FAFSA form on file at the Financial Aid Office (A-41 ASB) will be considered for a Study Abroad scholarship.

Academic departments and colleges may assist with scholarships and grants.

Private grants and scholarships outside of BYU may also assist (see kennedy.byu.edu/scholarships).

Scholarships are not applied until the last payment is due.

Preparation

Students are required to take the following prerequisite courses prior to departure:

CE 414—Engineering Applications of GIS (recommended for Fall 2023), or permission of the instructor

Students should be in good physical and mental health and have the ability to walk long distances, stand for long periods of time, climb stairs, etc. The travel portion of the program includes a tight schedule with lots of these types of activities. All classwork for the program will be completed during fall and winter semesters, prior to travel.

Students must meet all country- and program-specific COVID and health requirements for travel.

International study programs are physically, emotionally, and mentally demanding, so you must be in good health to participate. These programs often take place in locations that do not have the same level of safety and services in terms of transportation, living conditions, residential accommodations, food, public behavior, and policing that you may be used to on campus. Housing

Students will be housed in local hotels and accommodations.

Travel

Flights, which are covered by the program cost, will be arranged by the program directors through a BYU Travel agent. Students may not purchase their own flights.

Application Process

Students must be 18 years of age or older to participate.

Complete the online application here. A nonrefundable $35 application fee is required; applicants will be interviewed once the application is complete.

Students will be notified via e-mail of their acceptance into the program. The first payment is due upon acceptance; please refer to the Payment Information page.

Program Adjustments

International Study Programs (ISP) reserves the right to cancel this program, revise its offerings, or make any adjustments to the preliminary cost.

If it becomes necessary for ISP to cancel a program, all program payments made to BYU ISP will be refunded to the student’s BYU Financial account.

ISP is the only office authorized to cancel any of its programs.

Faculty

Dr. Dan Ames is a professor of Civil & Construction Engineering at BYU. He teaches courses in geographic information systems, hydroinformatics, and programming. He has made several professional trips to Europe and will enjoy studying with you in this beautiful and historic part of the world.
