Come examine the Fourth Industrial Revolution/Technology and how it affects international businesses, how technology solves a variety of problems, the advantages/disadvantages of technology use, and how it affects user experience (VR/AI). Students gain necessary insight to promote technology growth within their own future organizations as leaders. Although this program has an information systems emphasis, it is open to all majors.

Business visits (tentative): World Economic Forum/Pacific Islands Forum, Domino’s Pizza, Amazon, Microsoft, Fiji Sugar Corporation, Precious Plastics, Intuit, Clamms Seafood, Melbourne Cricket Ground, Chelsea Sugar Refinery, and others.

Cultural visits (tentative): Sabeto Hot Springs and Mud Pool, Fijian Village Tour, Sri Siva Subramaniya Swami Temple, Pure Fiji Factory, Sydney Opera House, Port Arthur and Tassie Devils, Penguin Parade, Movie World, Hobbiton, Waitomo Caves, All Blacks Experience, and more.

Courses

Students will receive 6 credit hours (in addition to 1.0 credit from the preparation course, see below) for the following courses:

BUS M 430—Introduction to International Business (3.0 hours)
IS 595R—International Experience (3.0 hours): Repeatable course for those who previously attended the IS study abroad

This program will fulfill course and foreign experience requirements for the Global Management Certificate offered by the Marriott School. These two courses can also be used as MISM electives (only 9 credits of undergraduate courses can be used in the MISM).

Students may not take any other courses on this program, including BYU Online courses, without approval by the program director and ISP.

Cost

$8,500–8,900

Includes all airfare from and to Salt Lake City International Airport, intercontinental transportation, Latter-day Saint undergraduate full tuition (increased cost for graduate and non–Latter-day-Saint students), housing, group excursions, some meals, some public transportation, and international health insurance.

Does not include personal expenses such as non-covered meals, souvenirs, additional public transportation, or non-group excursions.

Funding Sources

Regular BYU tuition scholarships, Pell Grants, and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to study abroad programs.

Students who submit the financial aid section of the ISP application and who have a current FAFSA form on file at the Financial Aid Office (A-41 ASB) will be considered for a Study Abroad scholarship.

Academic departments and colleges may assist with scholarships and grants.

Private grants and scholarships outside of BYU may also assist (see kennedy.byu.edu/scholarships).

Preparation

Accepted students are required to participate in an international cross-cultural preparation course (IAS 201, 1 credit hour). This evening course will be held during winter semester 2025.

Accompanying spouses need to be credit-bearing participants on the program. Spouses will also need to apply online and take the preparation course.

Students must meet all country- and program-specific COVID and health requirements for travel.

International study programs are physically, emotionally, and mentally taxing and you must be in good health to participate. These programs often take place in international locations that do not have the same level of safety and services in terms of transportation, living conditions, residential accommodations, food, public behavior, and policing that you may be used to on campus. Travel

Flights that are covered by the program cost will be arranged by the program directors through a BYU Travel agent. Students may not purchase their own flights.

Application Process

Students must be 18 years of age or older to participate.

Complete the online application here. A nonrefundable $35 application fee is required; applicants will be interviewed once the application is complete.

Students will be notified via e-mail of their acceptance into the program. The first payment is due upon acceptance; please refer to the Payment Information page.

Preference will be given to Information Systems students, but all applicants are considered.

Program Adjustments

International Study Programs (ISP) reserves the right to cancel this program, revise its offerings, or make any adjustments to the preliminary cost.

If it becomes necessary for ISP to cancel a program, all program payments made to BYU ISP will be refunded to the student’s BYU Financial account.

ISP is the only office authorized to cancel any of its programs.

Faculty

Greg Anderson, PhD, MBA, is a professor of information systems and the Glenn D. Ardis Teaching Professorship at the Marriott School of Business. Greg received the Bateman Student Choice Award in 2014 and 2017. He received the Marriott School Teaching Excellence Award in 2018. Greg has over 30 years of industry experience. He teaches courses in software development.

Spencer Hilton, MBA is an associate professor of information systems at the Marriott School of Business. In addition to his MBA degree, he also holds a BS degree in Computer Science and a BA degree in Communication/Public Relations with a minor in Business Administration. Professor Hilton teaches database design, web development, and project management courses. He has received the BYU Early Career Teaching Award and the BYU Marriott Student Centered Impact Award. Spencer has over 16 years of academic experience along with 7+ years of industry experience.
