This innovative new internship location, in collaboration with the Belgian Center for Occupational Hygiene (BeCOH) provides excellent opportunities for international learning as students focus on environmental and occupational health analysis. Students will work directly with chemists and technicians at BeCOH focusing on sample analysis using cutting-edge equipment and technology, results interpretation, data entry and analysis and the occasional fieldwork projects. Students will also have the opportunity to attend various environmental and occupational health classes at the historic KU Leuven (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven).

Courses

Students in the program are required to take a minimum of 6 credits from this list of courses:

Students may be interested in investigating the local culture by taking IAS 380 Cultural Proofs for 1–3 credit hours. This self-guided course allows students to do independent intercultural research, interview locals, and experience local culture.

Participants may not take any other courses on this program, including BYU Online courses, without approval by the program director and ISP.

Cost

Students pay for Latter-day Saint undergraduate full tuition for 6 credits (increased cost for graduate and non-Latter-day Saint students), which covers the cost of international health insurance coverage, coordination of program with the BeCOH, and on-site coordination and support.

Does not include international airfare, accommodation, preparation course tuition, passport, visa(s), immunizations, personal expenses, local transportation, meals, or cell phones/international data plan.

The cost for accompanying spouses is between $300-400.

Funding Sources

Regular BYU tuition scholarships, Pell Grants, and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to study abroad programs.

Students who submit the financial aid section of the ISP application and who have a current FAFSA form on file at the Financial Aid Office (A-41 ASB) will be considered for a Study Abroad scholarship.

Academic departments and colleges may assist with scholarships and grants.

Private grants and scholarships outside of BYU may also assist (see kennedy.byu.edu/scholarships).

Preparation

Accepted students are required to take an international preparation course (IAS 369R, 1 credit hour) during the second term of the winter 2025 semester.

International study programs are physically, emotionally, and mentally taxing and you must be in good health to participate. These programs often take place in international locations that do not have the same level of safety and services in terms of transportation, living conditions, residential accommodations, food, public behavior, and policing that you may be used to on campus. Students must meet all country- and program-specific COVID and health requirements for travel.

Housing

Students will be responsible for arranging their own housing local apartments or hostels in Leuven, Belgium, near BeCOH. The cost of housing is the personal responsibility of the students and is not included in the program cost.

Travel

Students are responsible for purchasing their own airfare to and from the program sites. Airline reservations must be made through BYU Travel. Students should contact a BYU Travel agent.

Application Process

Students must be 18 years of age or older to participate.

Complete the online application here. A nonrefundable $35 application fee is required; applicants will be interviewed once the application is complete.

Students will be notified via e-mail of their acceptance into the program. The first payment is due upon acceptance; please refer to the Payment Information page.

After acceptance by BYU, students must complete the CFHI application, be accepted by CFHI, and complete CFHI pre-departure requirements.

Program Adjustments

International Study Programs (ISP) reserves the right to cancel this program, revise its offerings, or make any adjustments to the preliminary cost.

If it becomes necessary for ISP to cancel a program, all program payments made to BYU ISP will be refunded to the student’s BYU Financial account.

ISP is the only office authorized to cancel any of its programs.

Faculty

Dr. Steve Thygerson, Professor of Public Health is the faculty director for the program. This is an independent internship, Dr. Thygerson will not be in Belgium for the program, but will be distance teaching students during the experience.
