Fundamentals of International Product Design & Development

SINGAPORE

International design groups have become essential in engineering design. In this program, students will travel to Singapore to study engineering design methods and processes with students from the National University of Singapore (ranked among the top universities in the world for technology) and Pennsylvania State University. BYU students will work on international design teams to solve real engineering design problems. Students and faculty will visit cultural, technical, natural, and culinary sites in Singapore. Courses

Students will register for 3 credit hours during spring term:

ME 479—Singapore International Product Design and Development (3 credit hours)

The course will be offered through the BYU Mechanical Engineering Department, but is open to any freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior student in the Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering. Students outside the college are also accepted, space permitting.

Students may not take any other courses on this program, including BYU Online courses, without approval by the program director and ISP.

Cost

$5,800–6,200

Includes three credits of Latter-day Saint undergraduate tuition (increased cost for graduate and non–Latter-day Saint students), airfare, housing, group activities, group transport on field trips, and international health insurance coverage.

Does not include personal expenses (sightseeing, personal supplies, and most food).

A scholarship of approximately $1,400 to help offset costs will be given by the Weidman Center for Global Leadership to student participants majoring in a program within the Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering. The Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering also offers a limited number of need-based scholarships for study abroad.

Funding Sources

Regular BYU tuition scholarships, Pell Grants, and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to study abroad programs.

Students who submit the financial aid section of the ISP application and who have a current FAFSA form on file at the Financial Aid Office (A-41 ASB) will be considered for a Study Abroad scholarship.

Academic departments and colleges may assist with scholarships and grants.

Private grants and scholarships outside of BYU may also assist (see kennedy.byu.edu/scholarships).

Scholarships are not applied until the last payment is due.

Preparation

All accepted students are required to register for the ME 479 course (spring 2026 term). This includes three pre-departure sessions with the program director and ISP personnel held during the first few weeks of the spring term (just prior to departure for Singapore). The pre-departure portion of the ME 479 course will be scheduled to accommodate those who register for the program.

Part-time BYU students and non-BYU students will need to pay an additional tuition fee for this prep class.

Students must meet all country- and program-specific COVID and health requirements for travel.

International study programs (especially this one) are physically, emotionally, and mentally demanding, so you must be in good health to participate. These programs often take place in locations that do not have the same level of safety and services in terms of transportation, living conditions, residential accommodations, food, public behavior, and policing that you may be used to on campus. Housing

Students will stay in student housing located on the campus of the National University of Singapore. It is anticipated that each student will have their own private room.

Travel

Flights, which are covered by the program cost, will be arranged by the program directors through a BYU Travel agent. Students may not purchase their own flights.

Application Process

Students must be 18 years of age or older to participate.

Complete the online application here. A nonrefundable $35 application fee is required; applicants will be interviewed once the application is complete.

Students will be notified via e-mail of their acceptance into the program. The first payment is due upon acceptance; please refer to the Payment Information page.

Application Deadline: 1 December 2025

Program Adjustments

International Study Programs (ISP) reserves the right to cancel this program, revise its offerings, or make any adjustments to the preliminary cost.

If it becomes necessary for ISP to cancel a program, all program payments made to BYU ISP will be refunded to the student’s BYU Financial account.

ISP is the only office authorized to cancel any of its programs.

Faculty

Brian Jensen, professor of mechanical engineering, will direct the program. The program will be taught by faculty experts from the National University of Singapore, Pennsylvania State University, and BYU.
