European Study Abroad in the Chemical Sciences

Dates: 29 April–27 May 2026 (approx.)
Priority Deadline: 1 November 2025
Application Deadline: 1 December 2025

We will spend approximately four weeks in Europe exploring sites of scientific and cultural significance. Below is a partial itinerary, with minimal changes expected.

Our journey begins in Iceland, where we’ll experience its natural beauty and visit a biotech company. From there, we travel to London, with a day trip to Cambridge, renowned for its scientific heritage, and a visit to Oxford, including another biotech company. Next, we head to Venice to explore the city and learn about its historic glass industry. In Slovenia, we’ll visit Postojna Cave to study its geological science, followed by a tour of Predjama Castle and Lake Bled. We then travel to Croatia, with excursions to Plitvice Lakes National Park, an opportunity to discuss solution chemistry, and a day trip to Pula to examine Roman-era chemistry at its remarkably preserved Colosseum. Our next stop is the Czech Republic, where we’ll visit the monastery where Gregor Mendel pioneered genetics and tour a scanning electron microscopy facility. The program concludes in Prague, one of Europe’s most beautiful cities.

Students participating in this study abroad need to have completed Chem 101, 105, or an equivalent course.

Preparation

Prerequisites for this study abroad are the following, or an equivalent course:

CHEM 101—Introductory General Chemistry (3 credit hours)
CHEM 105—General College Chemistry 1 (4 credit hours)

Accepted students are required to participate in an international cross-cultural preparation course (IAS 201R, 1 credit hour) during winter semester immediately preceding the study abroad. This class will be held during the second block of the sinter 2026 semester. Part-time BYU students and non-BYU students will need to pay an additional tuition fee.
