Discovering Early America in Europe

Join a remarkable tour that will bring you to some of the most historic sites of Europe while you discover how they impacted early American history. In Spain, visit citadels that influenced colonization in the Americas. Celebrate US Independence Day with the little town of Macharaviaya, which commemorates each July 4 with a Revolutionary War battle reenactment. Explore the mighty Rock of Gibraltar as you wind through tunnels built by the British during the largest battle of the American Revolution—fought 3,000 miles away from the United States! Skip over to Italy to discover the ancient foundations of American constitutionalism and government. Jaunt through southern France and walk in the footsteps of Thomas Jefferson as he visited ancient sites of the Roman Empire that inspired him. Jump to Switzerland and experience the majestic Swiss Alps as you learn about American religion and political thought in the heart of the Protestant Reformation. Continue to Paris, France, and discover how the French Revolution influenced early US politics as you visit the breathtaking Palace of Versailles, the sobering cells of the Conciergerie, and the Louvre Museum. Cross the English Channel to England and visit castles, palaces, and cathedrals that influenced America’s constitutional and political systems.

Courses

Students will enroll in the following courses while on this program:

HIST 220—US History Through 1877
HIST 390R—Foundations of US Constitutionalism

Students may not take any other courses on this program, including BYU Online courses, without approval by the program director and ISP.

Cost

$8,400–8,900

Includes Latter-day Saint undergraduate full tuition (increased cost for graduate and non–Latter-day Saint students), housing, group transportation on field trips, some meals, and international health insurance.

Does not include airfare, prep course tuition, or personal expenses.

Funding Sources

Regular BYU tuition scholarships, Pell Grants, and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to study abroad programs.

Students who submit the financial aid section of the ISP application and who have a current FAFSA form on file at the Financial Aid Office (A-41 ASB) will be considered for a Study Abroad scholarship.

Academic departments and colleges may assist with scholarships and grants.

History majors and minors may apply to the History Department for Experiential Learning Funds.

Private grants and scholarships outside of BYU may also assist (see kennedy.byu.edu/scholarships).

Preparation

Accepted students are required to participate in an international cross-cultural preparation course (IAS 201R, 1 credit hour). This class will be held during the second block of the winter 2027 semester. Part-time BYU students and non-BYU students will need to pay an additional tuition fee. Accompanying spouses need to be credit-bearing participants on the program. Spouses will also need to apply online and take the preparation course.

The UK now requires that all travelers get pre-approval to enter the country. For more details, please refer to the information under “Do I Need a Visa?" in our travel policy.

International study programs are physically, emotionally, and mentally taxing and you must be in good health to participate. These programs often take place in international locations that do not have the same level of safety and services in terms of transportation, living conditions, residential accommodations, food, public behavior, and policing that you may be used to on campus. If you have further questions or concerns on this, please see our travel policy.

Housing

Students will stay in local hostels and hotels arranged by the program.

Travel

Students are responsible for purchasing their own airfare to and from the program sites. Airline reservations must be made through BYU Travel. Students should contact a BYU Travel agent.

Application Process

Students must be 18 years of age or older to participate.

Complete the online application here. A nonrefundable $35 application fee is required; applicants will be interviewed once the application is complete.

Students will be notified via e-mail of their acceptance into the program. The first payment is due upon acceptance; please refer to the Payment Information page.

Space is limited and will fill fast. Priority will be given to early applicants.

Program Adjustments

International Study Programs (ISP) reserves the right to cancel this program, revise its offerings, or make any adjustments to the preliminary cost.

If it becomes necessary for ISP to cancel a program, all program payments made to BYU ISP will be refunded to the student’s BYU Financial account.

ISP is the only office authorized to cancel any of its programs.

Faculty

Tyson Reeder is a historian of early American international, political, and constitutional history. He is the author of Serpent in Eden: Foreign Meddling and Partisan Politics in James Madison’s America and Smugglers, Pirates, and Patriots: Free Trade in the Age of Revolution. He edited The Routledge History of US Foreign Relations and has authored numerous articles.
