Bali: Society, Devotion and the Arts

Dates: 25 June–6 August 2025 (approx.)
Application Deadline: 6 December 2024

For over a century, scholars from around the world have traveled to Bali to observe the unique interplay between Balinese social systems, religious ritual, and artistic performance, especially music and dance. Students in this program will gain an understanding of the relationship between artistic practices, religious traditions, and social structures, in a place where the intersection of these elements is as rich and complex as anywhere in the world. Students will also learn how these practices adapt to and address modern issues and challenges such as globalization, communication technologies, environmental degradation, etc. Students will develop a rich hands-on understanding of Balinese culture by observing, studying, and participating in community and artistic events, and by engaging in discussions with Balinese scholars of music, dance, and religion. Regardless of previous background or experience, all participants will gain extensive hands-on experience in Balinese gamelan music and traditional dance styles.

Students must meet all country- and program-specific COVID and health requirements for travel.

International study programs are physically, emotionally, and mentally taxing and you must be in good health to participate. These programs often take place in international locations that do not have the same level of safety and services in terms of transportation, living conditions, residential accommodations, food, public behavior, and policing that you may be used to on campus. If you have further questions or concerns on this, please see our travel policy.
