Australia: Music & Culture

Dates: 12 May–20 June 2025
Priority Deadline: 1 November 2024
Application Deadline: 1 December 2024

MUSIC, ART, DANCE, THEATRE—INDIGENOUS AND IMPORTED

Sydney is one of the worlds’ great cities—vibrant, cosmopolitan, culturally rich, and incredibly diverse. More than half of the city’s residents were born overseas; 35% of the population speak a first language other than English. Sydney is also home to an indigenous population that maintains a millennia-old connection to land and heritage. This blend of ethnicities and cultural legacies creates a remarkable mosaic of global and indigenous traditions, in a social environment marked by forbearance, sharing, and mutual respect. Only in Sydney, for example, could you sample teriyaki barramundi and curried buffalo spring rolls while watching Aboriginal art projected onto the sails of the world-famous Opera House (designed by a Dane), then grab gelato afterwards on the way to a Latin fiesta. In this five-week SAGE program, centered in the Sydney metropolitan area, you’ll earn GE credit for Global and Cultural Awareness, Civ 2, and Arts by engaging with and learning from these cultures and communities through music, drama, dance, food, art, and other forms of cultural expression. Daytrips to the Blue Mountains, the South Coast, Central Coast, and Southern Highlands provide additional opportunities to experience in more rural settings the indigenous and diasporic dynamics that have formed the national character of Australian culture. In a longer excursion to Canberra, we’ll study how these dynamics are expressed in the nation’s purpose-built capital. Finally, to cap off the program, we travel to the iconic heart of the outback—Uluru—for an unforgettable, immersive adventure through the spiritual soul of Australia.

Preparation

Accepted students are required to participate in our study abroad preparation course (IAS 201, 1 credit hour). This evening course will be held on Tuesdays from 4:00–6:00pm during the second block of the winter semester 2025. Accompanying spouses need to be credit-bearing participants on the program. Spouses will also need to apply online and take the preparation course.

Participants with Medical Conditions and Disabilities: International study programs are physically, emotionally, and mentally taxing and you must be in good health to participate. Because of changes in environment, diet, sleep, routine, and relationships, some conditions may worsen during an international study program. The availability of healthcare treatment and disability accommodations may be limited depending on the nature of the program and the destination country. Accessibility laws and services available in the United States are not generally available in other countries and some countries limit the prescription drugs you can carry into their boundaries. If you have a serious medical condition or a disability (physical, emotional, or mental), an international study experience may not be appropriate for you at this time. If you have a regimen of treatment, it should not be altered in order for you to participate. Please carefully review the requirements of the program and consult with your health care provider before applying to verify that you are adequately prepared to participate. If you have a serious medical condition or disability, please consider consulting with your UAC coordinator, or the International Study Programs office, to discuss the options that might or might not be available to you if you were to participate in an international study program.

Students must meet all country- and program-specific COVID and health requirements for travel.
House NAVY-BIG-01.svg

Housing

While staying in the Sydney CBD and Canberra, program participants will be housed in apartment suites or hotels. During the visit to Uluru, the program’s goals are to make the experience as immersive and “grounded” as possible, so participants will be housed on-site in permanent tents (sleeping in twin beds), with camp-style “bush tucker” meals. All housing is included in the program cost.
