Navigating the Future: Human Collaboration and Digital Innovation in Global Supply Chains

In this program, explore the intersection of people, supply chain processes, and cutting-edge technologies like AI in our digital age. Discover how these elements solve real-world challenges in creating and delivering products and services, with a focus on both Asia and the Pacific. Open to all majors.

Compare traditional and cutting-edge approaches across regions and organizations. Study the evolution from past industrial revolutions to the emerging 5th Industrial Revolution, which focuses on sustainable human-technology collaboration. Gain insights into different supply chain methods and connect with others across the Asia Pacific region to lead human-centered decisions that bridge cultures, technologies, and business operations!

Business visits: May include (tentative): logistics and packaging in New Zealand; Brambles sustainable crate manufacturing and harbor operations in Australia; textile manufacturing and call centers in Vietnam; floating, railway, and night markets in Thailand; Giant Bike and chip manufacturing in Taiwan; and Mazda and Toyota automotive manufacturing in Japan.

Culture experiences: May include (tentative): New Zealand’s Rotorua Māori culture, Waitomo glow worm caves, & Hobbiton; Australia’s Sydney Opera House; Vietnam’s Trang An Landscape Complex & Ha Long Bay; Thailand’s Chiang Mai elephant sanctuary & Royal Palace (from The King and I); Taiwan’s Taipei 101 and Jiufen Old Street; Japan’s Kyoto Monuments, Mount Fuji, and Imperial Palace. Explore multiple UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and of course, cultural foods and traditions!

Courses

While on this program, students enroll in 6 credits from the following courses that fulfill some requirements of the Marriott School Global Management Certificate:

Required: BUS M 430—Introduction to International Business (3 hours*)

Choose one: GSCM 390R—International Experience (3 hours; elective for GSCM students*)
or MSB 490R—Special Topics in Business: International Experience (3 hours).

*BUS M 430 & GSCM 390R can be used as GSCM electives

Students may not take any other courses on this program, including BYU Online courses, without approval by the program director and ISP.

Cost

$9,950–10,950

Includes Latter-day Saint undergraduate full tuition (increased cost for graduate and non-Latter-day Saint students), airfare from Salt Lake City International Airport to initial destination (approx. $1,300 value), flights between program countries, housing, group excursions, some meals, some public transportation, and international health insurance.

Does not include prep course tuition (winter 2025), costs of airfare home (from Asia) at the end of the program, or personal expenses such as non-covered meals, souvenirs, additional public transportation, and non-group excursions.

Funding Sources

Regular BYU tuition scholarships, Pell Grants, and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to study abroad programs.

Students who submit the financial aid section of the ISP application and who have a current FAFSA form on file at the Financial Aid Office (A-41 ASB) will be considered for a Study Abroad scholarship.

Academic departments and colleges may assist with scholarships and grants.

Private grants and scholarships outside of BYU may also assist (see kennedy.byu.edu/scholarships).

Preparation

Accepted students are required to participate in an international cross-cultural preparation course (IAS 201R, 1 credit hour). This evening course will be held during the winter semester 2025.

Students must meet all country- and program-specific COVID and health requirements for travel.

International study programs are physically, emotionally, and mentally taxing and you must be in good health to participate. These programs often take place in international locations that do not have the same level of safety and services in terms of transportation, living conditions, residential accommodations, food, public behavior, and policing that you may be used to on campus. If you have further questions or concerns on this, please see our travel policy.

Housing

Hotels are arranged by the program and included in the program cost.

Travel

The program covers the initial airfare from Salt Lake City International Airport to the initial destination, as well as flights between program countries. Students are responsible for arranging their flight home at the end of the program. All other flights will be arranged by the program directors through a BYU Travel agent. Students may not purchase their own flights but should work with BYU Travel for their final flight home.

Application Process

Students must be 18 years of age or older to participate.

Complete the online application here. A nonrefundable $35 application fee is required; applicants will be interviewed once the application is complete.

Students will be notified via e-mail of their acceptance into the program. The first payment is due upon acceptance; please refer to the Payment Information page.

Program Adjustments

International Study Programs (ISP) reserves the right to cancel this program, revise its offerings, or make any adjustments to the preliminary cost.

If it becomes necessary for ISP to cancel a program, all program payments made to BYU ISP will be refunded to the student’s BYU Financial account.

ISP is the only office authorized to cancel any of its programs.

Faculty

John W. Gardner, PhD, MBA/MA, is an associate professor of global supply chain management at BYU. He teaches courses in quality management and service design. His research focuses on how to make improvements through culture, process management, and multiple technologies. Dr. Gardner has helped lead prior studies abroad focused on industrial revolutions.

Jonathon Wood, MBA, Managing Director, Global Business Center. He has travelled with student groups for 24 years through 60+ countries. He has led hands-on student projects in multiple countries worldwide. Jonathon also manages the Center for International Business Education and Research awarded to BYU by the U.S. Department of Education.
