Asia Business

Discover the rich cultures of some of the oldest civilizations on earth while learning business practices in some of the world’s most dynamic economic regions. This program will expose students to the unique challenges and economic realities in Asia. While this program has a general business focus, the Asia Business Study Abroad is open to all majors. The cultures and sites we will visit will fascinate students from across campus who have an interest in international affairs, culture, business, and service.

Sony, SoftBank (Japan); Cashmere Factory, Humanitarian Projects (Mongolia); Marriott International, Deloitte (Hong Kong); Asus, Foxconn, TSMC (Taiwan); VinGroup, Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park (Vietnam); Eco Tourism Business, Ford (Thailand).

Cultural visits (tentative):
Tokyo Temple, Nakasendo Trail, Arashiyama Bamboo Forest (Japan); Tumen Ekh Ensemble, Terelj National Park (Mongolia); Victoria Peak, Old Town Central (Hong Kong); Taipei 101, Shifen Waterfall, Jiufen (Taiwan); Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh (Vietnam); Hong Island, River Kwai, Bangkok temple (Thailand).

Courses

Students will receive 6 credit hours (in addition to 1 credit for the prep course) for the following:

Bus M 430—Introduction to International Business (3 hours)
Bus M 490—Special Topics on becoming a Christlike Leader (3 credits)

This program will fulfill course and foreign experience requirements for the Global Management Certificate offered by the Marriott School.

Students may not take any other courses on this program, including BYU Online courses, without approval by the program director and ISP.

Cost

$9,100–9,500

Includes all flights within Asia, Latter-day Saint undergraduate full tuition (increased cost for graduate and non–Latter-day Saint students), housing, group excursions, some meals (generally all breakfasts), some public transportation, and international health insurance.

Does not include air travel from USA to Japan, return flight from Thailand to USA, or personal expenses such as non-covered meals, souvenirs, additional public transportation, and non-group excursions.

Funding Sources

Regular BYU tuition scholarships, Pell Grants, and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to study abroad programs.

Students who submit the financial aid section of the ISP application and who have a current FAFSA form on file at the Financial Aid Office (A-41 ASB) will be considered for a Study Abroad scholarship.

Academic departments and colleges may assist with scholarships and grants.

Private grants and scholarships outside of BYU may also assist (see kennedy.byu.edu/scholarships).

Preparation

Accepted students are required to participate in an international cross-cultural preparation course (IAS 201R, 1 credit hour). This evening class will be held Thursdays 5:00–6:00 p.m. during the second block of winter semester 2025. Part-time BYU students and non-BYU students will need to pay an additional tuition fee of approximately $304.

Students must meet all country- and program-specific COVID and health requirements for travel.

International study programs are physically, emotionally, and mentally taxing and you must be in good health to participate. These programs often take place in international locations that do not have the same level of safety and services in terms of transportation, living conditions, residential accommodations, food, public behavior, and policing that you may be used to on campus. Housing

Students stay in hotels or hostels. All housing and travel will be arranged by the program.

Travel

Students are responsible for purchasing their own airfare to and from the program sites. Airline reservations must be made through BYU Travel. Students should contact a BYU Travel agent.

Application Process

Students must be 18 years of age or older to participate.

Complete the online application here. A nonrefundable $35 application fee is required; applicants will be interviewed once the application is complete.

Students will be notified via e-mail of their acceptance into the program. The first payment is due upon acceptance; please refer to the Payment Information page.

Program Adjustments

International Study Programs (ISP) reserves the right to cancel this program, revise its offerings, or make any adjustments to the preliminary cost.

If it becomes necessary for ISP to cancel a program, all program payments made to BYU ISP will be refunded to the student’s BYU Financial account.

ISP is the only office authorized to cancel any of its programs.

Faculty

Shad Morris directs the Whitmore Global Business Center and is a professor of management. Passionate about his roles as a husband and father, he balances responsibility with humor. Shad's career spans roles at MSI, the World Bank, and Alcoa Corporation. He was a founding member of Samsung’s SKK Graduate School of Business in Seoul. Shad consults for organizations like the World Bank, Samsung, Hyundai, and Honeywell, focusing on leadership development. He holds a PhD from Cornell University, a Master’s in Organizational Behavior, a Master’s in International Relations, and a Bachelor’s in Psychology all from BYU.

Steve Smith is an associate professor and Warnick/Deloitte Fellow in the School of Accountancy. He holds PhD and MS degrees from Cornell University, as well as MAcc and Bachelor’s degrees from BYU. Steve is a widely published scholar and textbook author. He teaches cost and management accounting courses in the undergraduate and MBA programs at BYU and has consulted for various Utah organizations. He loves his family and the privilege of teaching at BYU.
