France: Art & Identity

Fulfill GE requirements in London, Paris, and Marseille with an Art professor and a French professor! Through coursework and real-world interactions at museums and monuments of London, Paris, and southern France, we will explore how art and language shape identity.

Our first week will start in London with visits to the British Museum, the National Gallery, the Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. We'll spend the next two weeks in Paris, learning about the artistic movements of Expressionism and Impressionism in the place where they originated. Museum visits to the Louvre, the Musée d'Orsay, and Monet's gardens in Giverny will be complemented by student art projects and experiences, including the opportunity to paint on-site in the gardens where Monet lived and worked. Students will learn foundational principles of linguistics as they get out into the city to learn and use essential French phrases in simple interactions. The final week of the program will take us to Marseille, where we will explore the art, language, and culture of the Mediterranean, including a visit to the city of Arles where Vincent Van Gogh created over 300 paintings.

Coursework includes an introduction to the French language; however, no prior French language experience is required.
