Art in the United Kingdom & Ireland

Explore the United Kingdom and Ireland on a grand study abroad that delves into the art, culture, history, and nature of the British Isles! We will take inspiration from our visits to world-class museums and galleries, the lush English countryside, the Scottish Highlands, historic cathedrals, and ancient art sites. All along the way, we will be making art, visiting practicing artists’ studios, and learning about the complex art and cultural histories of the region.

We will visit Dublin, Liverpool, London, Edinburgh, and Glasgow with possible day trips to Wales, Belfast, ancient art sites around Bath, and coastal regions.

While this program is sponsored through the Department of Art with an emphasis on viewing and producing art, all students are welcome. Non-majors can fulfill GE Arts credit by taking ART 101. Also available to non-majors is the ART 133 sculpture class. All courses fulfill Minor in Art requirements. Prerequisites are required for ART 394R and ART 480R.

Courses

Students will enroll in 6 credit hours from among the following courses:

ART 101—Introduction to Art and Drawing (3 credit hours)
ART 133—Intro to Three-Dimensional Art (3 credit hours)
ART 394R—Special Problems in Art (3 credit hours)
ART 480R—Advanced Studio (3 credit hours)

Students may not take any other courses on this program, including BYU Online courses, without approval by the program director and ISP.

Includes Latter-day Saint undergraduate full tuition (increased cost for graduate and non–Latter-day Saint students), housing, group transportation, program excursions, some meals, and international health insurance coverage.

Does not include airfare, most meals, art supplies, UK Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), or personal expenses.

Funding Sources

Regular BYU tuition scholarships, Pell Grants, and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to study abroad programs.

Students who submit the financial aid section of the ISP application and who have a current FAFSA form on file at the Financial Aid Office (3326 WSC) will be considered for a Study Abroad scholarship.

Academic departments and colleges may assist with scholarships and grants.

Admitted students will receive a $1,000 scholarship from the Department of Art. Talent Awards are available to qualified majors through the Department of Art.

Private grants and scholarships outside of BYU may also assist (see kennedy.byu.edu/scholarships).

Preparation

Accepted students are required to participate in an international cross-cultural preparation course (IAS 201R, 1 credit hour). This course will be held during the second block of winter semester 2027. Part-time and non-BYU students will need to pay an additional tuition fee for enrolling in the prep class.

Students should plan to be in the UK and Ireland for the complete duration of the program and refrain from scheduling late arrivals or early departures.

International study programs are physically, emotionally, and mentally taxing and you must be in good health to participate. These programs often take place in international locations that do not have the same level of safety and services in terms of transportation, living conditions, residential accommodations, food, public behavior, and policing that you may be used to on campus. Housing

Students will stay in hotels, apartments and hostels during the program.

Travel

Students are responsible for purchasing their own airfare to and from the program sites. Airline reservations must be made through BYU Travel. Students should contact a BYU Travel agent.

Application Process

Students must be 18 years of age or older to participate.

Complete the online application here. A nonrefundable $35 application fee is required; applicants will be interviewed once the application is complete.

Students will be notified via e-mail of their acceptance into the program. The first payment is due upon acceptance; please refer to the Payment Information page.

Program Adjustments

International Study Programs (ISP) reserves the right to cancel this program, revise its offerings, or make any adjustments to the preliminary cost.

If it becomes necessary for ISP to cancel a program, all program payments made to BYU ISP will be refunded to the student’s BYU Financial account.

ISP is the only office authorized to cancel any of its programs.

Faculty

Brian Christensen holds an MFA degree from Washington University in St. Louis and currently serves as an associate professor in the Department of Art at Brigham Young University teaching ceramics, sculpture, and various studio courses. He has taught at BYU for over thirty years and has co-directed numerous study abroad and field study programs. He will be accompanied by his wife Rita Baguio Christensen, who is currently a director at Salt Lake City Public Library.

Christopher Lynn is an associate professor in the Department of Art. He received his MFA from the Ohio State University and has been teaching at BYU since 2015. Prior to coming to BYU, he was a director and curator of art galleries and museums across the US for ten years. He will be accompanied by his wife, Maria Samuelson—who is also an artist—and their two boys.
