Join the Department of Art’s study abroad program for a hands-on exploration of Scandinavia, where nature, culture, and innovation come together. Traveling through Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, this program highlights the region's commitment to sustainability and ecology, offering students an opportunity to experience green living firsthand. Students will slow down to embrace the Scandinavian lifestyle through biking, walking, and connecting with nature. They will also gain unique insights from local artists and institutions. The program also emphasizes traditional crafts, particularly Sloyd (Slöjd), the Scandinavian practice of handcrafts, allowing students to engage with time-honored techniques in woodworking, textiles, and more. The program will explore the vibrant contemporary art scenes of the cities, delve into rich historical traditions, and foster meaningful interactions with the stunning natural landscapes that define this remarkable region.

Courses

Students will enroll in IAS 201R—Cultural Survey (1 credit hour) and 6 credit hours from among the following courses while on this program:

ART 101*—Intro to Art and Drawing (Emphasis Watercolor) (3 credit hours)

ART 394R—Special Problems in Art (emphasis on photography, ephemera, documentation and installation; 3 credit hours)

ART 480R—Advanced Studio (3 credit hours)

ARTED 397*—Issues in Contemporary Art (3 credit hours)

*GE credit

While this program is sponsored through the Department of Art with an emphasis on viewing and producing art, all students are welcomed. Non-majors can fulfill GE Arts credit by taking ART 101. Also available to non-majors is the ARTED 397 course. All courses fulfill Minor in Art requirements. Prerequisites are required for ART 394R and ART 480R.

Students may not take any other courses on this program, including BYU Online courses, without approval by the program director and ISP.

Cost

$6,300–6,800

Includes Latter-day Saint undergraduate full tuition (increased cost for graduate and non–Latter-day Saint students), lodging, group transportation, group admission fees, and international health insurance.

Does not include airfare, most meals, art supplies, or personal expenses.

Funding Sources

Regular BYU tuition scholarships, Pell Grants, and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to study abroad programs.

Students who submit the financial aid section of the ISP application and who have a current FAFSA form on file at the Financial Aid Office (A-41 ASB) will be considered for a Study Abroad scholarship.

Academic departments and colleges may assist with scholarships and grants.

Talent Awards are available to qualified majors through the Department of Art. Additional awards (up to $1,000) for qualified majors, minors and non-majors are also available through the Department of Art.

Private grants and scholarships outside of BYU may also assist (see kennedy.byu.edu/scholarships).

Preparation

Students are required to complete all necessary prerequisites courses prior to departure.

Accepted students are required to receive international cross-cultural preparation before departure. This instruction will start on 29 April.

Students should plan to tentatively begin on 16 May and finish on 18 June.  Students should refrain from scheduling late arrivals or early departures.

Students must meet all country- and program-specific COVID and health requirements for travel.

International study programs are physically, emotionally, and mentally taxing and you must be in good health to participate. These programs often take place in international locations that do not have the same level of safety and services in terms of transportation, living conditions, residential accommodations, food, public behavior, and policing that you may be used to on campus. Travel

Students are responsible for purchasing their own airfare to and from the program sites. Airline reservations must be made through BYU Travel. Students should contact a BYU Travel agent.

Application Process

Students must be 18 years of age or older to participate.

Complete the online application here. A nonrefundable $35 application fee is required; applicants will be interviewed once the application is complete.

Students will be notified via e-mail of their acceptance into the program. The first payment is due upon acceptance; please refer to the Payment Information page.

Program Adjustments

International Study Programs (ISP) reserves the right to cancel this program, revise its offerings, or make any adjustments to the preliminary cost.

If it becomes necessary for ISP to cancel a program, all program payments made to BYU ISP will be refunded to the student’s BYU Financial account.

ISP is the only office authorized to cancel any of its programs.

Faculty

Tara Carpenter Estrada regularly exhibits her mixed-media and ceramic work and has been selected for artist residencies in Tennessee, Utah, and Vermont. She has co-edited two books about art and motherhood, An Artist and a Mother and Give and Take: Motherhood and Creative Practice. She will be accompanied by her husband and four-year-old daughter on this trip.

Brian Christensen received an MFA from Washington University in St Louis and teaches ceramics, sculpture and 3D studio courses as an associate professor of art at Brigham Young University. He currently serves as Area Coordinator of the 3D Studio Area at BYU.

Dr. Mark Graham is an internationally known illustrator and scholar and has illustrated thirty children’s picture books. His research interests include teacher education, place-based education, graphic novels, ecological/holistic education, secondary art education, design thinking, and Himalayan art and culture. He received his PhD from Teachers College Columbia University.
