Dates: 21 May–14 June 2026
Application Deadline: 1 October 2025

TANZANIA, MALAWI, ZAMBIA, BOTSWANA

Join us for an unforgettable experience as we work with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) on the structures they are providing in developing countries in Africa. Beginning fall semester, we will meet with the NGO’s to look at designs of projects they are looking to complete next year. After once-per-week meetings winter semester and three weeks of classroom study and preparatory work spring term, we will spend a little over three weeks in Africa, which includes a 3-4 days of travel to and between countries. We will be visiting sites in Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia and Botswana. Site visits will include past projects and current projects of NGOs, Dzaleka refugee camp in Malawi, infrastructure projects, commercial construction projects, interaction with the University of Zambia, Victoria Falls, and a safari in Chobe National Park in Botswana.

Students will be organized into teams to study the technical features and construction associated with these NGO sites and provide analysis and recommendations on how the projects could be improved by the end users. Students will see construction in developing countries and learn about processes, safety, infrastructure, means and methods, and challenges in building in this part of the world. The course will be focused on all disciplines of civil and construction engineering: structures, transportation, construction and facilities management, geotechnical, water resources, and environmental with a strong focus on safety. The course will include credit for CFM Experiential Learning requirements. The course is open to Civil and Construction Engineering majors only.

Preparation

Accepted students are required to participate in an international cross-cultural preparation course during the second block of winter semester (CE 498R, 1 credit hour). Part-time and non-BYU students will need to pay an additional tuition fee for enrolling in this prep class.
