Brussels, Geneva, and Vienna are more than just beautiful European cities and cultural capitals. These cities also serve as Europe’s power centers, housing not only the UN and the EU but also the many smaller public and private organizations that influence and interact with these huge international entities.

Courses

Students will enroll in the following courses while on this program:

EUROP 399R—Internship in European Studies (1–5 variable credit hours, native or advanced English speakers only)
FREN 399R—French Language Internships (1–5 variable credit hours, advanced French speakers only)
FREN 311R—French Conversation (1–3 variable credit hours)
GERM 311R—Advanced Conversation (1–3 variable credit hours)
GERM 399R: German Language Internships (1–5 variable credit hours, advanced German speakers only)
IAS 380R—Proofs of Cultural Immersion (3 credit hours)

Students may not take any other courses on this program, including BYU Online courses, without approval by the program director and ISP.

Cost

BYU Tuition

Includes Latter-day Saint undergraduate full tuition (increased cost for graduate and non–Latter-day Saint students) and international health insurance.

Does not include prep course tuition, airfare, housing, transportation, personal expenses, etc.

Funding Sources

Regular BYU tuition scholarships, Pell Grants, and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to study abroad programs.

Students who submit the financial aid section of the ISP application and who have a current FAFSA form on file at the Financial Aid Office (A-41 ASB) will be considered for a Study Abroad scholarship.

Academic departments and colleges may assist with scholarships and grants, so be sure to contact the department chair and dean's office.

Private grants and scholarships outside of BYU may also assist (see kennedy.byu.edu/scholarships).

Preparation

Students do not need prior French, Flemish, or German language experience to participate in this internship, but we will help students find a foreign-language internship if that is what they choose.

Students are required to participate in a prep course, IAS 369R, during the second block of the semester before they leave on the internship.

Accompanying spouses need to be credit-bearing participants on the program with a minimum of 1 credit, but they are not required to do an internship. Spouses will also need to apply online and take the preparation course but will not be required to pay additional fees for this course.

Students must meet all country- and program-specific COVID and health requirements for travel.

International study programs are physically, emotionally, and mentally taxing and you must be in good health to participate. These programs often take place in international locations that do not have the same level of safety and services in terms of transportation, living conditions, residential accommodations, food, public behavior, and policing that you may be used to on campus. Housing

Students will arrange for their own housing in or near the city where they will work. Some providers will help students search for appropriate housing. Students working in Geneva are encouraged to find housing in Ferney-Voltaire, France, or in one of the French cities accessible by Geneva’s public transportation system. Some students working in Vienna may be eligible for home stays organized by the Austro-American Institute.

Travel

Students are responsible for purchasing their own airfare to and from the program sites. Airline reservations must be made through BYU Travel. Students should contact a BYU Travel agent.

Application Process

BYU welcomes students from any university to apply to participate on our study abroad programs. However, internships and direct enrollment programs are limited to BYU Provo students.

Students must be 18 years of age or older to participate.

Complete the online application here. A nonrefundable $35 application fee is required; applicants will be interviewed once the application is complete.

Students will be notified via e-mail of their acceptance into the program. The first payment is due upon acceptance; please refer to the Payment Information page.

Spring–Summer, Fall Application Deadline: 1 March 2025
Winter 2026 Application Deadline: 1 October 2025

Program Adjustments

International Study Programs (ISP) reserves the right to cancel this program, revise its offerings, or make any adjustments to the preliminary cost.

If it becomes necessary for ISP to cancel a program, all program payments made to BYU ISP will be refunded to the student’s BYU Financial account.

ISP is the only office authorized to cancel any of its programs.
