Have you studied abroad or plan on going this year? Share a one-minute video of something you learned during a BYU international study program and you could win up to $1,000 in cash prizes! Winning videos will be screened during our International Study Programs Film Festival event held in November during International Education Week (IEW) 2022.
The theme for 2022’s film festival is “If you don’t go, you’ll never know.” Life abroad opens our eyes to new perspectives, traditions, experiences, and lifestyles. What is something you learned on a BYU international study program? Be creative and engaging in sharing your take on this year’s theme. Your film may include personal stories, interviews, action shots, etc. It might be thought-provoking, inspiring, hilarious, or exciting. The possibilities are endless! Just make sure your video addresses our 2022 theme: “If you don’t go, you’ll never know.”
Winning films will receive the following prizes:
1st Place: $1,000 cash prize
2nd Place: $500 cash prize
3rd Place: $250 cash prize
Honorable Mentions: Gift cards
All BYU students who have participated in a BYU International Study Program from fall semester 2021 through summer term 2022, or 1 September 2021 through 31 August 2022, are eligible to submit one film for prizes. Videos made during independent travel or from mission experiences will not be considered.
The deadline to submit a film is Friday, 16 September 2022 at midnight. You must complete the submission form (which includes the link to your video) before that time to be eligible for prizes. Late videos will not be considered.
FORMAT AND LENGTH
Submissions don’t have to be professional entries, but will be evaluated for sound and visual quality. We urge you to submit the highest quality video possible. Videos will be uploaded to YouTube, so make sure yours is in the appropriate format.
Film entries must be no longer than one minute. We will not accept any submissions over sixty seconds.
All music included in video submissions MUST be original content or come from a free source such as those listed on the BYU Copyright website. Videos that use copyrighted music will be disqualified. You will be required to share your music source(s) on your submission form, so be sure to keep track of that information.
We are not accepting any hard copy submission forms or discs, so please carefully read and follow all of the steps below to be considered in the competition:
- You will need to upload your highest quality video to https://box.byu.edu and create a shareable link to your film. Steps to do so are listed below.
- Every student has free access to the Box cloud storage system. Simply pull up https://box.byu.eduand login using your NetID email (NetID@byu.edu) and NetID password.
- Click on “New” in the top right-hand corner and select “File upload.”
- Select your video and click “Upload.”
- Once your video finishes loading, click the three dots to the right of the file to select “Share.”
- A pop-up will appear. At the bottom of the pop-up under “Share link,” toggle to select “Create shared link.” A URL to your video will appear.
- Make sure “People with the link” is showing under the file URL so that the link is accessible and no sign-on is required.
- Copy the link.
- Fill out a submission form. It will ask you for your Box video link, so be prepared to paste it into the appropriate field in the form. Be sure to have your music source(s) ready to enter as well.
- Upload your video and complete the submission form before the deadline on Friday, 16 September 2022 at midnight. Early submissions are gladly welcomed, but late videos will not be considered.
If you have any problems or questions about uploading your video to Box, please email email@example.com for help.
Your film will be judged by the public on social media and by Kennedy Center judges. We will upload all the videos to the YouTube BYU Stories Abroad Channel.
The submission form provides areas for you to select tags and a creative title to increase your video’s visibility and optimization on the Internet. Choose wisely! The Kennedy Center reserves the right to discount spam comments or irrelevant repeated commenters. Please note that if your video contains questionable or inappropriate content, you may not proceed to the next round.
Kennedy Center judges will evaluate the videos based on the storytelling elements, theme adherence, video and sound quality, overall content, and organization.
Winners will be notified no later than Tuesday, 1 November 2022.
Winning videos will be screened during our International Study Programs Film Festival event held in November during International Education Week (IEW) 2022. More details on that TBA. You do not have to be present to win.
Check out our past winners.
If you do not win, your video might still be featured at the film festival, on the BYU Stories Abroad YouTube Channel, on Kennedy Center social media channels, and/or on the Kennedy Center International Study Programs website.
