We are pleased to announce that four BYU students and alumni have been named as semi-finalists for the 2021–22 Fulbright U.S. Student Program, including:
- Ashlen Lemon, Cambodia, English Teaching Assistant Award
Having engaged deeply with Cambodian communities in the U.S., Ashlen plans to use her knowledge of Cambodian culture and the Khmer language to promote cultural understanding in her role as a teacher of English. - Natalya Nielsen, Sweden, Study/Research Award
Natalya hopes to pursue a master’s degree in Literature, Culture, and Media with a focus on Swedish and Danish literature at one of Sweden’s top universities prior to pursuing a PhD in Scandinavian Studies. - Orion Weller, Israel, Study/Research Award
Orion hopes to continue his research in natural language processing—a subfield of computer science, linguistics, and artificial intelligence, and work—to make these methods more efficient.
Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, the Fulbright Program offers recent graduates and graduate students opportunities for research, study, and English teaching in over 140 countries with the goal of promoting international goodwill. This year, over 11,000 students from over 700 institutions applied for one of over 2,200 grants. Recipients of Fulbright awards are selected on the basis of academic achievement, a record of service, and leadership potential in their respective fields.
The Fulbright is a natural fit for BYU students, many of whom have a deep interest in cross-cultural engagement and value international experiences.
