Female Spiritual Networks in the Diaries of Emmeline B. Wells, 1880s–1900s

Friday, September 29

B107 MARB

Hear from Lisa Olsen Tait of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' Church History Department as she lectures on "Female Spiritual Networks in the Diaries of Emmeline B. Wells, 1880s–1900s” at this fall 2023 Global Women's Studies Colloquium event.

This presentation examines the spiritual and religious life of Emmeline B. Wells, prominent Latter-day Saint women’s leader at the turn of the twentieth century, as captured in her diary. Focusing primarily on the 1890s, her lived religious experience was rooted in female spiritual networks—that is, a major proportion of her spiritual engagement took place in the company of other women and in the context of deeply meaningful relationships with those sisters in the gospel. We now see those practices as both beautiful and remote—an indication that the concept of “spirituality” and how it is expressed in everyday practice changes over time.

You can watch the lecture live in 238 HRCB or via Zoom by clicking here.
