FLAS: Foreign Language and Area Studies Scholarship
U.S. Department of Education scholarships encourage the study of specific underrepresented languages. Students must plan to use the language in their future career.
There are two types of FLAS scholarships. Academic Year Scholarships are for studying one language course and one area studies course during fall semester and one language course and one area studies course during winter semester (four total classes for the academic year).
Summer Scholarships are for studying the language intensively (120–140 classroom hours) in an overseas setting for a duration of at least six weeks.

Application Instructions
Click on the Apply Now button at the bottom of this page to begin an online application.
Applicants are required to submit the names and contact information of two faculty references who will be emailed an electronic evaluation form to complete. You MUST contact your faculty references BEFORE listing them on your application. DO NOT use a faculty member as a reference if you do not have their prior permission to do so! The faculty members listed in your application will not receive the request for a reference until AFTER your application is formally submitted. You will receive a confirmation email notifying you that your application has been successfully submitted.
Your application will not save automatically! Press the “save” button at the bottom of the page every time you close the document or your information will be lost.
You may apply for both the Summer FLAS award and the Academic Year FLAS award, but must complete both applications in the system, and must have your references submit their recommendations twice.
