American Foreign Policy Council
Description: In-person ONLY The internship program at the American Foreign Policy Council provides aspiring young foreign policy leaders with the opportunity to thrive and begin contributing to national security in a meaningful way. Internships are awarded three times a year (typically January to April, May to August, and September to December). Our internship is rigorously research-based and awards positions only to those who are capable of serious work. The majority of our interns delve into large research projects and assist with the publication of articles and/or the organizing of events with foreign dignitaries. Interns are also provided an opportunity to work closely with foreign policy professionals, thanks to the relatively small size of our organization and the selectivity of our intern program. Many past interns have also been published in prestigious media outlets, including U.S. News and World Report, CNN.com, and the Wall Street Journal Europe, among others. AFPC also does its recruiting internally and looks to current or former interns to fill job openings. However, anyone applying to the internship program with the intention of it leading directly to a position at AFPC should know that we keep a small permanent staff and that job openings are therefore few and far between.

US Agency for International Development USAID
Office of Transition Initiatives
Description: OTI at USAID was created in 1994 as a distinct operating unit within USAID to help local partners advance peace and democracy in priority conflict-prone countries. Seizing critical windows of opportunity, OTI works on the ground to provide fast, flexible, short-term assistance targeted at key transition needs. Countries experiencing a significant political transition in the midst of a disaster or emerging from civil conflict have unique needs that cannot be fully addressed by traditional disaster relief. Timely and effective assistance to promote and consolidate peaceful, democratic advances can make the difference between a successful or a failed transition. OTI assists in securing peace by aiding indigenous, mostly non-governmental, civil society and media organizations, using such mechanisms as support for re-integration of ex-combatants into civilian society; development of initiatives to promote national reconciliation; identification of quick-impact community self-help projects to meet urgent economic needs; and aid to independent media outlets and community-based organizations to help promote informed debate and broaden public participation.

The Committee for Human Rights in North Korea
Description: The only U.S.-based bipartisan NGO tasked to research and publish on North Korean human rights violations. The Committee for Human Rights in North Korea (HRNK) seeks to raise awareness about conditions in North Korea and to publish research that focuses the world’s attention on human rights abuses in that country. At the same time, the Committee is seeking creative solutions for improving human rights in North Korea. We all hope that the regime in North Korea will change its human rights practices, open the gulags, and give its people a chance to air their grievances. But we cannot wait for these developments. The misery suffered by the people of North Korea is often dismissed as being too difficult to deal with and impervious to external pressure. Yet, there are initiatives that can be taken to signal to the regime that its abuse of its own people is a matter of global concern and must be changed. There are also measures that can be taken to alleviate the plight of those who have fled North Korea. At HRNK, we wanted to come up with a list of policies that would have an immediate, positive impact on the situation facing North Koreans today. The result is the ten-point list below of policy recommendations for multiple US administrations to consider. We have begun a series of consultations with high-level officials of the administration, and we will use every opportunity we have in the next few months to bring attention to these ten objectives: *Broaden United States Policy on North Korea to Include Bilateral and Multilateral Approaches to Human Rights Issues. *Persuade China to Respect the Rights of North Korean Refugees *Establish a First Asylum Program for North Korean Refugees *Fully Implement the North Korea Human Rights Act (NKHRA) *Provide Food Aid that Reaches the Hungry *Provide Essential Information Directly to the People of North Korea *Provide Opportunities for North Korean Defectors to Improve the Lives of their Countrymen *Seek a Full Accounting of Foreign Citizens held in North Korea Against their Will *Stop the Flow of North Korea’s Ill-gotten Wealth *Prepare for Political Transition and a Humanitarian Crisis in North Korea

China Environment Forum
Location: Washington, DC
Description: CEF typically selects 2 research and/or communications and design interns for each academic semester (Fall, Spring, and Summer terms of approximately three to four months). However, appointments can be made throughout the year for periods of varying length. No internship will exceed one year in duration, and all internships must be served in Washington, D.C, in-person. Since 1997, the Wilson Center's China Environment Forum (CEF) has been the “go-to” resource for convening policy, business, research, and NGO practitioners from around the world on the most pressing energy, water, and pollution problems facing China. We play a unique, nonpartisan role in creating multi-stakeholder dialogues around China’s energy and environmental challenges, identifying new areas for collaboration. CEF is currently diving into ocean plastics, focusing on US-Asia collaboration and the creation with the Wilson Center’s Serious Games Initiative to create an educational video game on plastics. The China Environment Forum offers rewarding internships to students who are studying or have experience related to environmental and energy challenges in China and trans-boundary environmental issues related to China. Currently, our vanguard project focuses on circular economy and ocean plastic waste issues in China and Southeast Asia, so additional background in these fields is a plus. CEF provides interns with experiences that enhance their professional research, writing, and communication skills and prepares them for careers in environmental, energy, and climate policy. As the responsibilities of this internship consist mainly of researching, writing, and editing, please submit a short writing sample (something you have written in the past) and elaborate on these skills in your CV and cover letter. Due to temporary cost constraints, internships are currently unpaid.
