“American Studies taught me how to read, analyze, and think critically about how people in America behave.”

What is your job/position?

Co-president/owner at Advanced Graphics. Wide format digital printing.

Describe the path that took you from your American Studies degree to your current career or life situation.

Went to Weber State and earned an MBA. Bought a business from my father, with my brother, and have grown and expanded to become a print manufacturer.

What are the specific competencies you cultivated as an American Studies student that you now use in your professional life and that set you apart from your colleagues?

American Studies taught me how to read, analyze, and think critically about how people in America behave.

What are some of the surprising ways in which your American Studies degree has helped you in your professional or personal life?

At the time, I majored in American Studies because I loved American History. What has surprised me throughout my career is how much more I have learned to appreciate the other aspects of American Studies such as economics and geography.

What do you wish you had known as an American Studies student? What advice would you share with current students?

I only wish I would have known about the major sooner! It has such a broad spectrum of subjects that it covers that it gave me more flexibility and options to choose from as I pursued my undergrad studies. Plus, I loved the subject matter!
