FLAS Application Instructions

Application Deadlines

Summer 2018: November 15, 2017

Academic Year 2018-2019: January 16, 2018

Online applications must be submitted by 5:00 PM on the day of the deadline; no late applications will be accepted. Please complete all sections of the application. Applicants are required to submit the names and contact information of two faculty references who will be emailed an electronic evaluation form to complete. DO NOT use a faculty member as a reference if you do not have their prior permission to do so! The faculty members listed in your application will not receive the request for a reference until AFTER your application is formally submitted. You will receive a confirmation email notifying you that your application has been successfully submitted.

U.S. Department of Education Priorities

Only the following U.S. government designated “less-commonly-taught” Latin American languages are eligible for FLAS funding at BYU:

Brazilian Portuguese Guarani Haitian Creole K'iche Quechua

Only the following U.S. government designated “less-commonly-taught” Asian languages are eligible for FLAS funding at BYU:

Cebuano* Chinese (Mandarin) Indonesian* Hindi* Japanese Korean Thai* Tagalog* Russian Vietnamese*

*Note: Classes in these languages are often offered on a rotating basis. Please check the BYU Course Catalog to ensure the language level you require is being offered in 2017-2018.


Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and enrolled full time at BYU. All applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 to be considered. Undergraduates must be studying at a 200 level or above when they begin their the FLAS scholarship. Although you may apply for a FLAS scholarship to study more than one language, you may only receive funding for one language per scholarship year.

Students applying for FLAS scholarships are strongly encouraged to attend one of the Info Sessions held weekly on Thursdays at 11:00 AM, room 257 HRCB (Kennedy Center).
