The world’s rooftop in northern Nepal and Tibet is home to Buddhist traditions rich in iconography and deep religious meaning. The Kathmandu Valley has 7 World Heritage sites that weave together Buddhist and Hindu traditions. Students will gain understanding of the relationship Buddhist and Hindu traditions, schools, and culture. We will also be developing a STEAM education program with faculty at Kathmandu University. With a base in Kathmandu, the program includes a 14-day trek to Everest Base Camp, including several Buddhist Monasteries along the route.

Nepal: Art in the Himalayas
DATES
25 April–24 May 2022 (approximately)
HOUSING
Students will stay in a traditional Newari house transformed into a heritage hotel in Patan (near Kathmandu). On the trek we will stay in teahouses along the route.
COURSES
Students will register for 4 credit hours from the following courses:
ARTED 578R Art Education Studio (3 credit hours)
ART 394R Special Problems in Art (1 credit hours)
Students may not take any other courses on this program, including BYU Online courses, without approval by the program directors and ISP.
COST
$3,300–3,700 + roundtrip airfare from SLC (approximately $1,300–1,600)
Includes Latter-day Saint, undergraduate tuition (increased cost for graduate and non-Latter-day Saint students), housing, excursions, admissions, transportation, some meals, and international health insurance coverage.
Not Included: airfare, personal expenses, some meals, and visa to Nepal.

PREPARATION
All students participating in the program will have an intensive experience with Nepalese art and culture as well as STEAM education. Accepted students are required to participate in an international, cross-cultural preparation course (IAS 201, 1 credit hour). This evening course will be held during the second block of winter semester 2022.
Part-time and non-BYU students will need to pay an additional tuition fee for enrolling in the prep class.
Accompanying spouses need to be credit-bearing participants on the program. Spouses will also need to apply online and take the preparation course.
All participants are required to show proof of complete COVID-19 vaccination (including booster) at least two weeks prior to departure.
FUNDING SOURCES
Regular BYU tuition scholarships, Pell Grants, and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to study abroad programs.
Students who submit the financial aid section of the ISP application and who have a current FAFSA form on file at the Financial Aid Office (A-41 ASB) will be considered for a study abroad scholarship and may be considered for other scholarships. They must indicate on their original online application that they want to be considered for financial aid.
Academic departments and colleges may assist with scholarships and grants.
Students may also apply for experiential learning funds from their respective departments.

APPLICATION PROCESS
Students must be 18 years-of-age or older to participate.
Complete the online application at kennedy.byu.edu/apply. A nonrefundable $35 application fee is required.
Applicants will be interviewed once the application is complete.
Students will be notified via e-mail of their acceptance into the program.

SCHEDULE AND TIME COMMITMENT
All students participating in the program will be traveling together with the directors. Travel will be arranged through BYU Travel. Participants should plan to leave the USA on April 23 and arrive to Kathmandu on April 25.
