Come to Europe and experience a wealth of diverse cultures, languages, places, and peoples! Join us for over five weeks of extended stays in places such as Lisbon, Madrid, Barcelona, Cinque Terre, Florence, Bologna, Innsbruck, Munich, Maastricht, Bruges, and Paris as well as visits to places such as Sintra, Salamanca, Avila, Toledo, Aix-en-Provence, Pisa, San Gimignano, Parma, Neuschwanstein Castle, Nuremberg, Rothenburg, Ettlingen, Europa Park, Bacharach, Brussels and more! This program is designed to give students firsthand knowledge of the multicultural landscape that makes modern Europe both a fascinating place to tour and vacation but also an amazing place to learn about the issues and challenges of living in a world of diverse cultures. This study abroad will be most appealing to those students who are interested in learning about local cultures through visiting diverse neighborhoods, observing elements of cultural life, talking to local peoples, eating local foods, learning the cultural history of the cities and ethnic groups, as well as seeing how cultural life in these countries and cities is changing dramatically in the 21st century. Drawing upon the frameworks of geography and sociology, students come to understand European cultures and will see how features of increasing globalization, such as tourism and immigration, are changing Europe and creating new social challenges. The program will also focus on learning the history of intergroup conflict associated with persecuted minority groups in Europe, particularly Jews, Romani, immigrant Muslims and immigrant Africans. Students will acquire experiential knowledge through a wide variety of planned activities ranging from walking, bike and Segway tours to museum, mosque, cathedral and concentration camp (Dachau) visits and other unique hands-on experiences, both planned and as desired on their own. Through these experiences they will gain a greater understanding and knowledge of the vital and important issues surrounding cultural relations in the 21st century. (If you are at all interested in the program, please email one of the faculty directors so we can email you a more complete itinerary and description of our plans.)
