In partnership with UBELONG, the focus of this internship will be either public health education (preparing and delivering public health workshops to locals, who may include children or adults, in community or health clinic settings) or health care (shadowing and assisting doctors and other healthcare professionals in hospitals and clinics.) Depending on local need, public health education interns will work in local clinics, community centers and food banks. Health care interns are usually placed at either a maternal/child hospital or a pediatric hospital.
UBELONG has a reputation for providing very affordable opportunities for students by implementing a model that relies on local partners to provide services such as airport pickup, orientation, housing, meals and field support. Merida is the destination for this program, a city recognized as one of Mexico’s most welcoming destinations. Regarded for its safety, Merida is a fantastic location to explore and experience Yucatan culture. The Plaza Grande, lined by beautiful colonial buildings, is bustling with activity and makes for a great place to stroll or just sit back and relax. Beautiful beaches off the Gulf of Mexico are easily reachable in 40 minutes by bus from downtown Merida, and there are watering holes and caves that are well worth a visit. The Celestun Mangroves, where pink flamingoes can be viewed, is nearby, as are many cultural activities in the area. Some of Mexico’s most impressive Mayan archaeological sites are close, including the famous Uxmal and Chichen Itza, which is one of the new Seven Wonders of the World.
