Language Options

Are you wondering what to do with your language abilities? BYU offers a variety of options to help you maintain and use your language skills.

Major/Minor

Language skills are a valuable asset in many fields or work and look great on resumes to potential employers.

Improve your grammar and technical and historical knowledge of the language you speak by completing a language minor. With careful planning, another option could include double majoring in your language of choice.

Language Certificate

Would you like official recognition of your foreign language proficiency included on your transcript? A Language Certificate will make a meaningful addition to your resume as you seek employment, begin your career, or apply for graduate school and can be accomplished by taking only three courses.

Most area studies majors can complete a certificate using requirements from their major. Find out more by visiting the web site, go to room 3086 JFSB, or call (801) 422-1201 with questions.

Foreign Language
Testing

Placement Exam: Designed to help students who have taken language classes in high school or at other universities/colleges to determine which course they should begin with based on their ability. Find out more by visiting the web site or call (801) 422-3541.

Challenge Exam: Designed for returned missionaries and students with a higher level of language experience. It gives students the opportunity to challenge the 100- and 200-level language classes and earn up to 16 graded credit hours. The Challenge Exam is only available to students who have registered for the designated language courses and must be taken in the first class at BYU/first class after the mission.

For less-commonly-taught languages: Foreign Language Achievement Testing Services (FLATS) provides students the opportunity to receive up to 12 credit hours of pass/fail university credit by examination. For more information, visit the web site, the office in 1163 JFSB, or call (801) 422-3512.

Chinese Flagship

The mission of the Chinese Flagship Center is to create global professionals who can function culturally and linguistically in the professional Chinese world. It can be broken into three phases:

  • Campus study focused on a year abroad
  • Direct enrollment at Nanjing University in China
  • Internship in a Chinese institution in your related field of study

Students accepted into the Chinese Flagship Program may be eligible for limited support for the overseas capstone program, overseas summer programs, and domestic intensive language summer programs through the Chinese Flagship Center.

To learn more, visit the web site or visit the office in 3122 JKB.

Localization and Translation Club

In our rapidly expanding global world, there is a high demand for the talent to bring products, services, and ideas across cultural and linguistic borders. That is what the Translation and Localization industry has to offer.

Attend weekly meetings and one large event every semester, along with other activities that provide students with opportunities to develop their skills and grow as professionals in the field.

Visit the web site for more information.

Service Opportunities

Look for other service opportunities, both on and off campus, where you can incorporate your language skills.

Examples include: Centro Hispano, 4-H mentoring, Service to the World, Refugee Services, CASA, International Rescue Committee.

Visit the BYU Y-Serve web site for more ideas or visit the Just Serve web site to find local community service opportunities in your area.
