Students will apply geographical principles of adventure travel and global studies to learn through experience about adventure travel and conservation programs in Tanzania. Students will climb Mount Kilimanjaro with local guides, attend lectures and field trips at the College of African Wildlife, learn Swahili, and travel with local guides through National Parks and game reserves to apply academic principles to actual experiences.

HOUSING
Students will be staying at Mweka Wildlife College housing, hotels and in tents while on Kilimanjaro and in the national parks.
COURSES
Students will register for 6 credit hours during spring term from the following courses:
GEOG 349 – Global Adventure Travel (3 credit hours)
GEOG 493R – Special Topics (3 credit hours)
HIST 339 – African Social Change (3 credit hours)
Participants may not take any other courses on this program, including BYU Online courses, without approval by the program director and ISP.
COST
$4,700–5,200 (approx.)
Includes Latter-day Saint, undergraduate full tuition (increased cost for graduates and non–Latter-day Saint students), park fees, Mount Kilimanjaro climb, porter fees, housing, most meals, and international health insurance coverage.
Does not include airfare (from SLC approximately $2000), COVID-19 testing upon arrival and departure ($100), some meals, and personal expenses.

PREPARATION
Students must be 18 years of age or older. Accepted students are required to participate in an international, cross-cultural preparation course (IAS 201, 1 credit hour) second block Winter semester 2022. Part-time BYU students and non-BYU Provo students will need to pay an additional tuition fee of approximately $315 for the prep course. Accompanying spouses need to be credit-bearing participants in the program. Spouses will also need to apply online and take the preparation course.
All participants are required to show proof of complete COVID-19 vaccination (including booster) at least two weeks prior to departure.
FUNDING SOURCES
Regular BYU tuition scholarships, Pell Grants, and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to study abroad programs. Students who submit the financial aid section of the ISP application and who have a current FAFSA form on file at the Financial Aid Office (A-41 ASB) will be considered for a study abroad scholarship and may be considered for other scholarships. They must indicate on their original online application that they want to be considered for financial aid. Academic departments and colleges may assist with scholarships and grants. Private grants and scholarships outside of BYU may also assist (see kennedy.byu.edu/scholarships).
APPLICATION PROCESS
Students must be 18 years of age or older. Complete the $35 (non-refundable) online application at kennedy.byu.edu/apply. Applicants will be interviewed once the application is complete. Students will be notified via e-mail of their acceptance into the program. The first payment is due upon acceptance.
