An international technical internship provides a unique opportunity not only to gain additional technical skills appropriate for your chosen major within the Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering, but also to gain an in-depth, in-country experience that provides significant opportunities to increase your leadership capabilities, including exceptional problem solving, effective teamwork, and clear communication. It also allows you to develop confidence in your ability to work within an international setting. Many leaders in industry have indicated that, in addition to technical skills, leadership and global agility are essential to compete in today’s ever-changing environment.

Courses

Students will enroll in the following courses while on this program:

ENGT 199R—Weidman Center Global Internship (0.5 credits)

Students may not take any other courses on this program, including BYU Online courses, without approval by the program director and ISP.

Cost

Interns pay BYU tuition to participate.

Includes Latter-day Saint undergraduate full tuition (increased cost for graduate and non–Latter-day Saint students). Students will also need to pay the $35 ISP application fee.

Does not include personal expenses, passport, vaccinations, excursions, or visa costs.

The goal of all sponsored international internships is for the sponsoring company to provide sufficient compensation so that the experience is economically feasible for the student. Most typically this may include airfare, housing, local transportation, and in certain cases, an additional monthly stipend.

Funding Sources

Regular BYU tuition scholarships, Pell Grants, and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to study abroad programs.

Students who submit the financial aid section of the ISP application and who have a current FAFSA form on file at the Financial Aid Office (A-41 ASB) will be considered for a Study Abroad scholarship.

Academic departments and colleges may assist with scholarships and grants.

Private grants and scholarships outside of BYU may also assist (see kennedy.byu.edu/scholarships).

Preparation

Accepted students are required to participate in an international, cross-cultural preparation course (IAS 201R, 1 credit hour).

Accepted students must complete all required paperwork, including registration, with the Kennedy Center and College of Engineering for the specified internship.

Accompanying spouses need to be credit-bearing participants on the program. Spouses will also need to apply online and take the preparation course.

Students must meet all country- and program-specific COVID and health requirements for travel.

Housing

In most cases, the sponsoring company provides housing at company-owned dormitories or in housing near their facility. In some cases, the student may need to work either with the sponsoring company or on their own to identify appropriate housing.

Travel

Students are responsible for purchasing their own airfare to and from the program sites. Airline reservations must be made through BYU Travel. Students should contact a BYU Travel agent.

Application Process

BYU welcomes students from any university to apply to participate in our study abroad programs. However, internships and direct enrollment programs are limited to BYU Provo students.

Students must be 18 years of age or older to participate.

Complete the online application here. A nonrefundable $35 application fee is required; applicants will be interviewed once the application is complete.

Students will be notified via e-mail of their acceptance into the program. The first payment is due upon acceptance; please refer to the Payment Information document.

Program Adjustments

International Study Programs (ISP) reserves the right to cancel this program, revise its offerings, or make any adjustments to the preliminary cost.

If it becomes necessary for ISP to cancel a program, all program payments made to BYU ISP will be refunded to the student’s BYU Financial account.

ISP is the only office authorized to cancel any of its programs.
