Voices of Oceania: Listening and Storytelling in New Zealand and Australia

NEW ZEALAND AND AUSTRALIA

Become a better listener and engaging storyteller as you spend seven weeks listening to and learning from Māori, Pacific Island, and Australian communities who use stories to transmit core values, sustain relationships, and connect people to place. We will be shepherded through New Zealand’s volcanic valleys and lush rainforests and through Australia’s iconic Outback and dazzling cities by local guides who have a deep understanding of the oral traditions and storytelling practices of Oceania’s diverse peoples.

You will also learn how to share your own story as you patter through Hobbiton, twitch through Kāpiti Island Nature Reserve to glimpse endangered birds, cruise across Fiordland National Park’s spectacular Milford Sound, trek through the oldest tropical rainforest on earth, stargaze the Southern Cross from the Australian Outback, and wander through Sydney’s lit-up streets during its annual festival of light, music, and food. Your increased capacity to tell your own story will help you find meaning in your incredible experience, making this a truly transformative study abroad program.

“Voices of Oceania” will be a physically active program, full of opportunities to explore the breathtaking landscapes of New Zealand and Australia. We will be floating beneath the glowworms of Waitomo Caves, swimming in the crystal-clear coastal bays of Abel Tasman National Park, sea-kayaking in Ōkārito Lagoon, hiking along wild stretches of the Tasman Sea coastline, snorkeling among the Great Barrier Reef’s coral gardens and 1,600 species of fish, and trailing an indigenous guide around Uluru. These awe-inspiring experiences in nature will deepen the community we create through sharing and listening to stories.
