Rheumatic Relief American Samoa

The Rheumatic Relief Internship program is an integrated clinical, public health, and research experience that seeks to reduce the suffering associated with rheumatic heart disease, a potentially fatal disease. Students will shadow medical professionals, including board certified cardiologists and sonographers, in diagnosing this largely silent disease in American Samoan youth 5–15 years old. They will provide public health promotion programs in primary schools. In all aspects of this program, participants will work closely with indigenous medical and educational professionals to promote a lasting change in American Samoa that will result in a sustainable improvement in medical care.

Courses

Students are required to enroll for 2 credit hours during the Spring Term experience. Students may choose from CHEM 397R for 2 credit hours, or internship credit from their academic department.

Students may not take any other courses on this program, including BYU Online courses, without approval by the program director and ISP.

Cost

Tuition

Includes Latter-day Saint undergraduate tuition (increased cost for graduate and non–Latter-day Saint students), round-trip airfare between Hawai’i and American Samoa, accommodations, most meals, group transportation, cultural excursions, and international health insurance.

Does not include round-trip airfare between the continental U.S. and Hawai’i, some meals, personal spending money, or international phone plans.

Funding Sources

Regular BYU tuition scholarships, Pell Grants, and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to study abroad programs.

Students who submit the financial aid section of the ISP application and who have a current FAFSA form on file at the Financial Aid Office (A-41 ASB) will be considered for a Study Abroad scholarship.

Academic departments and colleges may assist with scholarships and grants.

Private grants and scholarships outside of BYU may also assist (see kennedy.byu.edu/scholarships).

Preparation

Accepted students are required to participate in an international, cross-cultural preparation course (IAS 201R, 1 credit hour). This class will be held during the second term of the winter 2022 semester. Part-time BYU students and non-BYU Provo students will need to pay an additional tuition fee for the prep course. Accompanying spouses need to be credit-bearing participants in the program. Spouses will also need to apply online and take the preparation course.

Students must meet all country- and program-specific COVID and health requirements for travel.

Housing

Students will live in hotels on the island. Most meals will be provided by the program. The program cannot meet all special dietary needs, nor can it ensure a safe environment for those with food allergies. If you have dietary or allergy concerns, we recommend that you speak with the International Study Programs office before you apply.

Travel

Students are responsible for purchasing their own airfare to and from the program sites. Airline reservations must be made through BYU Travel. Students should contact a BYU Travel agent.

Application Process

Students must be 18 years of age or older to participate.

Complete the online application here. A nonrefundable $35 application fee is required; applicants will be interviewed once the application is complete.

Students will be notified via e-mail of their acceptance into the program. The first payment is due upon acceptance; please refer to the Payment Information document.

Program Adjustments

International Study Programs (ISP) reserves the right to cancel this program, revise its offerings, or make any adjustments to the preliminary cost.

If it becomes necessary for ISP to cancel a program, all program payments made to BYU ISP will be refunded to the student’s BYU Financial account.

ISP is the only office authorized to cancel any of its programs.

Faculty

Paul Savage, PhD, Department of Chemistry/Biochemistry. Dr. Savage is the lead faculty advisor and will assist in directing the program.

Lori Allen, PhD, RDCS, RCS, Affiliate Faculty, Department of Chemistry/Biochemistry and a registered cardiac sonographer. Dr. Allen is the overall director of this research effort and will administer the health promotion program. Dr. Allen will teach the prep course and will direct the program in American Samoa.

Marv Allen, MD, FACC, Affiliate Faculty, Department of Chemistry/Biochemistry: Clinical Director. Dr. Allen is a cardiologist and has directed the clinical diagnostic aspect of this program for more than 12 years. Dr. Allen will direct the program in American Samoa.

Jeanne Borget, APRN, FNP-C, Affiliate Faculty, Department of Chemistry/Biochemistry. Jeanne is a nurse practitioner in the area of family medicine and will assist with the prep course and clinical duties in American Samoa.
