Chemistry Across Europe: Science, History, & Culture

Dates: 28 April–3 June 2027
Application Deadline: 1 December 2026

We will spend six weeks in Europe visiting sites of both scientific and cultural importance. In general, we will spend one week in a city, which will be our base, visiting important sites in that city as well as those in surrounding cities. Our plan is to start in London, England and then proceed to Leiden (between Amsterdam and The Hague), Netherlands; Bruges, Belgium; Paris, France; Bern, Switzerland; and Milan/Florence/Rome, Italy. Day trips will be taken to cities like Oxford, Pisa, Lauterbrunnen, and Venice. Some of our cultural visits will include the British Museum in London, the Louvre and Eiffel Tower in Paris, Anne Frank’s house in Amsterdam, and the cathedral in Milan. We will see some of the great universities and educational institutions of Europe, including Oxford and Cambridge. As we go between countries, we will experience different cultures and languages. We will be in northern, central, and southern Europe. We will be in countries that speak English, Dutch, French, German, and Italian. Each morning, a student will present a short (ca. 30-minute) lecture on the place(s) we will visit. These presentations will be prepared the semester before we travel. They will usually have a focus on the chemistry related to the venue(s) of the day. We recommend that students that participate in this study abroad have taken CHEM 101 or 105 or the equivalent.

Preparation

Students are required to take the following prerequisite courses prior to departure:

CHEM 101—Introductory General Chemistry
CHEM 105—General College Chemistry 1

Accepted students are required to participate in an international cross-cultural preparation course (IAS 201R, 1 credit hour). This class will be held during the second block of the winter 2027 semester. Part-time BYU students and non-BYU students will need to pay an additional tuition fee.
