Art of Italian Living in Rome

26 April–20 June 2026
Priority Deadline: 1 November 2025
Application Deadline: 31 December 2025

Learn Italian or pursue an internship while immersing yourself in the "Art of Italian Living," experiencing the cuisine, art, and culture of Rome. This eight-week program offers two tracks: 1) language students, regardless of prior experience, will have daily Italian language classes taught by local instructors; and 2) interns, who must have proficiency in Italian, will gain hands-on experience with a local business or organization, further developing language and professional skills in a global workplace. Past interns have worked in marketing, finance, law, science labs, engineering, computer science, data analytics, graphic design, pottery studios, culinary arts, athletic training, non-profit organizations, cinedubbing, museums, archives, dental clinics, university orchestras, working with refugees, and teaching English and Italian.

In addition to language classes and internships, your evenings and weekends will be filled with museum visits, cooking courses, and cultural learning in the heart of the ancient city. As part of this program, you will experience Rome intimately—exploring its neighborhoods, reflecting in baroque churches, observing everyday life from lively piazzas, and practicing your Italian by engaging in conversations with locals. Through journal assignments, you will reflect on the language, culture, cuisine, art, and history of Italy. Field trips will take you to the heart of Tuscany, to explore Gothic Siena and its traditional neighborhoods, and to Renaissance Florence, where you will study world-renowned masterpieces of Italian art history. Through these experiences you will learn “The Art of Italian Living.”

Funding Sources

Regular BYU tuition scholarships, Pell Grants, and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to study abroad programs.

Students who submit the financial aid section of the ISP application and who have a current FAFSA form on file at the Financial Aid Office (A-41 ASB) will be considered for a Study Abroad scholarship.

Preparation

Students with no exposure to Italian are encouraged to apply for the study abroad. Accepted students are required to participate in an international cross-cultural preparation course (IAS 201/HCOLL 396R, 1 credit hour), during second block of winter semester 2026. Part-time and non-BYU students will need to pay an additional tuition fee for enrollment in the prep course. Accompanying spouses of students need to be credit-bearing participants on the program. Spouses will also need to apply online, take the preparation course, and pay for the program.

Students must meet all country- and program-specific COVID and health requirements for travel.

International study programs are physically, emotionally, and mentally taxing and you must be in good health to participate. These programs often take place in international locations that do not have the same level of safety and services in terms of transportation, living conditions, residential accommodations, food, public behavior, and policing that you may be used to on campus. If you have further questions or concerns on this, please see our travel policy.

Housing

We will live in traditional housing in the heart of Rome, using the metro or buses to get to school and museums. Breakfasts and dinners will be included in Rome. Special dietary needs may be challenging to accommodate in these living arrangements, and students with dietary restrictions should consider carefully if they can manage their needs on this program.
