In partnership with Johns Hopkins University and PRISMA, a Peruvian NGO that designs and implements innovative research studies and projects, students will be part of an exciting global health internship experience in Peru. Students will work on this funded environmental health study focusing on children’s exposure to indoor air pollution. Students will become immersed in the Peruvian culture and language. Students will live in apartments provided by the project in Puno, Peru, a southeastern city located on the shores of Lake Titicaca.

The starting date for Summer Term program is August 1, 2022 and will run until August 25, 2022 (official dates TBA).

Housing will be in apartments rented by Johns Hopkins University.
COURSES
Students in the program Summer Term are required to take a minimum of 3 credits from this list of courses: IAS 399, HLTH HLTH 492R, HLTH 491R, or HLTH 496R.
COST
$1,000 – 1,500
Includes Latter-day Saint undergraduate tuition for 3 credits Summer Term, international health insurance coverage, accommodations, transportation to program activities, orientation, and on-site coordination and support.
Does not include international airfare, passport, immunizations, personal expenses, meals, cell phones/international data, tuition for prep course, or personal excursions.
TRAVEL
Students are responsible for purchasing their own airfare to and from the program. Airfare reservations must be made through BYU Travel. Students should contact a BYU Travel agent.

PREPARATION
Prior to departure, students are required to meet with the program director at least 3 times to prepare for travel and the project.
All participants are required to show proof of complete COVID-19 vaccination (including booster) at least two weeks prior to departure.
FUNDING SOURCES
Regular BYU tuition scholarships, Pell Grants, and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to study abroad programs. Academic departments and colleges may assist with scholarships and grants. Private grants and scholarships outside of BYU may also assist (see kennedy.byu.edu/scholarships).
APPLICATION PROCESS
Priority Deadline: April 1 2022. Applications will remain open until program is filled. If spots remain open, the final deadline is anticipated to be May 1, 2022. Complete the online application at kennedy.byu.edu/apply. The application requires a $35 fee. Applicants will be interviewed once the application is complete. Students will be notified via e-mail of their acceptance into the program.
FACULTY
Steven Thygerson, Professor of Public Health is the faculty director for the program. He has extensive global health experience in countries such as Nepal, Mozambique, South Africa, Ethiopia, Brazil, and Pakistan.
SCHEDULE AND TIME COMMITMENT
Students will be in country for 3.5 weeks. Students will also be required to complete academic assignments prior to this time and upon returning home from the program.
