Experience international affairs through diplomacy and journalism with Europe as your classroom. We will learn about journalism and diplomacy by studying key ideas, institutions, and individuals. Students will learn from diplomats, journalists, and other experts, as well as through lectures, discussions, reading, writing, and reflection in a variety of settings. This study abroad offers a deeper understanding of international affairs as well as a resource for future writing, research, and professional opportunities.

HOUSING
Students will be stay in affordable hotels in each city. Rooms typically accommodate two–four persons per room. All housing will be arranged by BYU International Study Programs.
COURSES
Students will register for 6 credit hours from the following courses while abroad:
COMMS 382 Issues in Global Communications (3 credit hours)
COMMS 420 Advanced Reporting (3 credit hours)
IAS 397 Directed Readings in Diplomacy (3 credit hours)
Students may not take any other courses on this program, including BYU Online courses, without approval by the program director and ISP.
COST
$7,400–7,900
Includes Latter-day Saint, undergraduate full tuition (increased cost for graduate and non-Latter-day Saint students), housing, admissions, group transport within Europe (including flights), and international health insurance coverage.
Not included: airfare to and from New York City and Europe, books, passport fee, and personal expenses.
TRAVEL
Students are responsible for purchasing their own airfare to and from the program sites. Airline reservations must be made through BYU Travel. Students should contact a BYU Travel agent.

PREPARATION
Accepted students are required to participate in an international, cross-cultural preparation course (IAS 201R, 2 credit hours). This class will be held Wednesdays from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. during the second block of winter semester 2021. Accompanying spouses need to be credit-bearing participants on the program. Spouses will also need to apply online and take the preparation course. Part-time BYU students and non-BYU students will need to pay an additional tuition fee. Students are expected to keep all aspects of the BYU Honor Code and ISP rules during the program.
FUNDING SOURCES
Regular BYU tuition scholarships, Pell Grants, and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to study abroad programs. Students who submit the financial aid section of the ISP application and who have a current FAFSA form on file at the Financial Aid Office (A-41 ASB) will be considered for a study abroad scholarship and may be considered for other scholarships.
Students must indicate on their original online application that they want to be considered for financial aid.
Academic departments and colleges may assist with scholarships and grants.
Private grants and scholarships outside of BYU may also assist (see kennedy.byu.edu/scholarships).
APPLICATION PROCESS
Students must be 18 years-of-age or older to participate.
Complete the online application at kennedy.byu.edu/apply. A nonrefundable $35 application fee is required.
Applicants will be interviewed once the application is complete.
Students will be notified via e-mail if their application has been accepted into the program.

FACULTY
Joel Campbell, Associate Professor of Journalism in the School of Communications teaches courses in media writing, journalism principles, media ethics and research. He directed the 2019 New York Communications Study Abroad and Global Communications Internship program and has written for numerous media organizations.
Cory W. Leonard, Associate Director, has taught courses in the David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies and J. Reuben Clark School of Law on international organizations, diplomacy, and global issues. He has directed the award-winning BYU Model UN program for twenty years and led numerous delegations to United Nations conferences worldwide.
SCHEDULE AND TIME COMMITMENT
The program begins in New York on 22 June and will end in Paris on 9 August. Students should refrain from scheduling late arrivals or early departures. Family and friends are welcome to join students after the program ends.

International Study Programs (ISP) reserves the right to cancel this program, revise its offerings, or make any adjustments to the preliminary cost. If it becomes necessary for ISP to cancel a program, all program payments made to BYU ISP will be refunded to the student’s BYU Financial account. ISP is the only office authorized to cancel any of its programs.
