Learn law in Geneva! Take courses in international and comparative law while participating in an exciting externship with providers such as the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, the U.S. State Department in Geneva, and other international organizations. As a primary hub of public international law, Geneva is the epicenter for developments in international trade law and human rights jurisprudence. Experience a semester learning law, while applying the principles each day as you participate in your externship.

HOUSING
Students will live in a furnished apartment located in the Church-owned International Government Relations Offices Site in Geneva. Students are responsible for providing their own meals. In some cases, the program housing may not accommodate married couples. In these cases, students will need to find a suitable alternative.
COURSES
Students will spend thirty hours per week working at their externship (for 9 credit hours) and then will take two 3-credit classes to be taught either by distance learning or at the International Government Relations Offices Site, such as:
LAW 639 – International Business Transactions
LAW 688 – European Union Law
LAW 708 – Comparative Constitutional Law
LAW 751 – U.S. Foreign Relations Law
Participants may not take any other courses on this program, including BYU Online courses, without approval by the program directors and ISP.
COST
Students pay full-time Law School tuition which will cover housing, externship placement, potential instruction in Geneva by a resident adjunct faculty, international health insurance coverage, and airfare to and hotel in San Francisco to secure a work visa.
Does not include visa fees, airfare to and from Geneva, local transportation in Geneva, personal expenses, and meals.
Cost for accompanying spouses: $2,000-$2,500
Includes Latter-day Saint BYU graduate tuition for 1 credit hour and housing in Geneva.

BYU requires all child dependents to be covered by International Health Insurance coverage which will be $400 per child.
TRAVEL
Students are responsible for purchasing their own airfare to and from the program. Airfare reservations must be made through BYU Travel. Students should contact a BYU Travel agent.

PREPARATION
Passports must be valid for at least six months beyond the end of the program.
Students accepted to the program must work with the program directors and their Geneva-based employer to secure a work visa, which will require traveling to the Swiss Consulate in San Francisco. Accepted students must also participate in required pre-departure meetings.
Accompanying spouses need to be credit-bearing participants in the program. Spouses will also need to apply online and participate in pre-departure meetings.
FUNDING SOURCES
Regular full-time Law School tuition scholarships and Federal Insured Student Loans and Pell Grants may be applied to international programs.
APPLICATION PROCESS
Students must be enrolled in the J.D. program at the law school and must be 18 years of age or older.
Complete the online application. The application requires a $35 fee.
Students will be notified via e-mail of their acceptance into the program. Applicants may be interviewed as part of the application process once the application is complete.
The first payment is due upon acceptance. Please refer to the 2021 Payment Information document.

International Study Programs (ISP) reserves the right to cancel this program, revise its offerings, or make any adjustments to the preliminary cost. If it becomes necessary for ISP to cancel a program in advance, all program payments made to BYU ISP will be refunded to the student’s BYU financial account.
