This lecture will examine social media’s role in crafting a contemporary black feminist readership. A largely popular and populist movement, contemporary black feminism is realizing the grassroots dream of earlier black feminists by deploying the technologies at writers’ and readers’ fingertips to educate, activate, and organize against racism and sexism in today’s America.
Kristin L. Matthews is an associate professor of English at BYU and is the author of Reading America: Citizenship, Democracy, and Cold War Literature. Matthews is the former director of American Studies at BYU and a recipient of the Faculty Women’s Association Teaching Award and other awards.
