Although all Americans are familiar with the history of Atlantic slave trade and slavery in the U.S. South, much less is known about the enslavement of Native Americans. Yet this too was common practice, from the early Spanish conquistadors to settlers in the American West. In fact, mass slavery was a primary contributing factor to the decimation of Native American populations.
Andrés Reséndez is an associate professor of history at University of California, Davis. Reséndez is author of numerous publications on the history of Latin America, including the Other Slavery (2016), which was awarded the Bancroft Prize.
